I came here to say that I love my S500's and ATH pleathers. Before the S500's, I was always EQ'ing my phones. I don't feel the need at all with the S500's. It's both odd and liberating (and awesome) that I don't feel the need to do that with these phones. This of course is also great for when listening to tunes off of soundcloud or tunein (have been listening to a cool station called [DI] PROGRESSIVE for the last 8 hours lol!) where you can't EQ the phones anyway. So there, I love my S500's too!

Now that I got that out of the way, I must respond to your point above.... you're killing me LOL! I want to try those pads. How much do the AKG pads and Shure 840 pads cost? More than Doc's $1000 HD pleathers? Just kidding of course - it's awesome that you (and Doc!) experiment and getting even more incredible sound out of the S500's. Bravo! That still doesn't detract from the fact that you're killing me! :)

My saving grace is that I'm so satisified with the S500/ATH pleather combo biggrin.gif

Edit: swiched over to tunein's "PROG.FM" station. If you enjoy real progressive rock, this is your station (and streaming at you at 128k no less lol!).

Well, I'm demoing my S500s tomorrow for someone who is thinking about getting the S400s, and then I'll be posting a classified here on head-fi for them this weekend.

I love the S500 size, but feel like I need more isolation and less leakage for portability. And I got to try the Grado SR80is last week. For clear mids and highs, WOW! I ended up getting the SR225is, too, and am keeping them, so I had a chance to try the L-cush bowls on the SR80is. For $120 with those pads, they are incredible. Worth trying out if you can if the mids and highs are what draws you to the S500s. Of course, Grados are the ultimate in "not portable." LOL

Thanks. I just read up and got acquainted with them a bit - they are highly regarded! Too many phones!!!

I discovered the S500/AT leather combo......and thought it was the best possible combo......until today!  The AKG/Shure 840 pad combo on the S500 puts the S500/AT leather combo in the back seat, the AKG/Shure 840 combo gives me the comfort and sound of full size headphones.....besting the quality sound of my modded AT-W1000X!

Best mids and vocals I have heard to date!

I just got 2 pairs of ATH velours in. Going to try them with the HM5 pads.

Planning to get some AKG or ATH pleather too.

Damn. These pads are going to cost more than the headphones.

PICS NOW!!! LoL

Too bad the Shure 840 pads don't really wrap over the headphones though, unless you found a ingenious of solving this problem??? Care to share some more juicy details.

Oh btw are the Shure 840 pads the same as the Shure 440 pads? They seem to be the same size but the material might be cheaper on the 440s due to it being a lower priced entry level headphone. :(

cute, did you try the HM5 pads yet? I was wondering if the 840s are better for going circumaural.

The 840 and 440 pads are not the same, the 840 pads are touted for their comfort, what you said in your second sentence above for the 440 pads!

Yeah that was what I read as well, it makes sense since the 840s are a higher price bracket hence better quality.

@Mad Max

You wanna give us some inputs on this matter besides your doubtful smiley? LoL Any personal experiences with the 840 and 440 pads cuz they are selling at different prices on amazon, so there must be some difference no?

So what difference did the bowl pads make compared to the stock comfy pads? And yes, definitely not portable.gs1000.gif

Unveils the mids and highs so that they SR80is are much closer to the detail of the SR225is. Of course they are a little brighter then. And improves the bass. Innerfidelity has graphs of the SR80i, SR225i with stock L-Cush, and SR225i with the Comfies. I'd say the difference between the SR225i tested with the L-Cush and the Comfies reflects well the difference in the bass between the SR80i with the different pads. Easy to imagine, too, since the SR80i with Comfie response is very similar to the SR225i with Comfies, so it works about the same the other way.

And yeah. Not for portable use (LOL). So that no one misunderstands. smile.gif

I got my HM5 pads last night. They go on the S500 better than the 840 pads (which was really not at all... curious what you did cute), but they still fall off unless you do something to tighten them up. Since I'm not adept at sewing I'm up for any ideas...

I got a pair of Beyer DT250 pads from Sweetwater....they come with a piece that can be fitted behind the AGG pads on the cups of the S500/S400, put the 840 pads over.....I used that as a template.....complicated and $18, so not cheap, but worth it for me.  Transforms the S500/S400 to comfortable, great sounding circumaural phones.....full size headphone soundstage/separation, balanced sound throughout, with glorious mids and vocals, others may not think it is worth the troube and cost, but I only paid $23.99 for the S500/S400....probably not for everyone but I am a fanatic!
