Just picked my S500s, didn't really believe the hype in this thread but I have to say I'm impressed.  I wont claim to be a audiophile and it's hard to compare headphones completely off memory but I would definitely say these are very comparable to Vmoda m80s and AT M50s.  Obviously at about half the price of both of them so a much better deal.  Only thing comparable at this price are CAL!s

Hey big fan of the S500's thanks to this thread.  Anyone know a good way to mod them to make them around ear other than the HM5 mod?

Has anyone compared the JVC HA-S500 to the Sony MDR-ZX600 ?

I found these last ones to have a great build quality, but SQ really let me down and had to sell. Bass was extremely pronounced and loose. All other frequencies striving to survive the bass flood.

I am considering the JVCs as a replecement for a decent on the go headset...

To my ears, that is exactly how the S500s sounded on day 1.  However, the bass is very textured / controlled.  Bass quantity decreases significantly with time, making the cans more neutral (IMO), but still with emphasized bass.  I would describe the overall signature as warm and dark.  They do respond well to the EQ on my Sansa Clip+, allowing the mids to step forward.  Mids / upper mids don't have the finest detail, and there is a response spike around 7Khz, but the cans are well worth the $60.

I will have to give them a try I guess, to find out...

Thanx for replying!

Yet the S500 are not basshead cans (Well in my opinion anyways).

S500, ZX700, CAL!, DJ100, K81DJ, or HARX 700 or 900?

I listen to EDM mostly and pop music...

Some isolation and minimal leakage would be the best!

I like my music to be more bright aka more highs and a some more bass :D
