The JVC HA-S500.. Appreciation, fan thread. - Page 492

Does anyone else find the HA-S500 a bit murky?

Its great for EDM and pop music but I find if I listen to punk rock/heavy music with fast bass, guitar and male vocals, the sound is very heavy and thick sounding (congested).

I've ordered the WS55 pads to improve the comfort but am tempted to get the es700 or ws99 in the hope to open up the music and separate the bass from the mids. It could just be that the mids are recessed and the bass is overpowering them? I'm new to all this, so I'm unsure on the correct terms.

How long have you had them?

5 months but infrequent use, burned in about 40 hours with bassy music when first got them.

I didn't notice this to start with but had become apparent over the last 2 months or so

Any examples of the music you like? If I have any of it I'll try it with mine, which are well and truly burned in, being a year old.

Maybe you're used to bright headphones? I use my S500's for alternative rock and I find them quite enjoyable. Also, bass quality does seem to improve with more burn in.

My new pads arrived about 10 minutes ago after ordering from ATH sales yesterday afternoon, amazing  service! Upon swapping the pads I noticed that the driver wasn't aligned onto the back casing and there was about a 2mm gap exposing the inside chamber! I had to recable a few months back after damaging the original cable and must have put the headphone back together wonky.

Now that is fixed I shall re listen to the headphones again. It's a shame the forum won't let me post pictures.

hi guys, basically i have no experience/knowledge in headphones, however, found this forum a few months ago and fell for the hype to buy these and i can say that these are amazing. i wanted to ask what sound signature do these have as i am loving the bass and sound in general in these and i'm looking to buy something similar for portable use either in ear or something stylish and small which would sound as good or better than these. i've listened to some more expensive headphones, but i still preffered these, probably i could call myself basshead as for example when tried beats mixr in hmw and i preffered them to bose or b&w. i'd appreaciate any recommendations for smth sounding similar to these! cheers

Well, I just jumped on the bandwagon.  I purchased a CAL! a couple months back, but after reading about these, I had to grab one.  Plus, these are portable and of a sturdier build than the CAL!s.  I will also purchase a case and new earpads later on.  Any suggestions for which earpads I should grab?

So today I let some of my friends listen to the S500's on a couple of bass-heavy songs. After each one took a listen, I asked them to take a guess at how much they cost (keep in mind that they also heard some of my other HP's like the dt880's and m50's) The first one said $120, the second said $180 (this guy likes bass), and the third said $100. When I told them that they costed me $55 plus the shipping, they were quite surprised. Never thought they'd have this good of a reaction. Now all of them want a pair biggrin.gif

I have given away 2 S500 and 4 FX40. My sister is a convert and she powers them with a Fiio E11.
