true, but a CAL at $60 is very close to the same price, even tho the Denon sound better then the Cal :)

 

I think I paid around $70 for mine back in 09?

The mind blowing thing is that if you live in jpn you can pick these S500s up for like $40 shipped. That is the truly the best bang for the buck EVER!!!

Does the Denon sound better than the CAL?  I remember reading a bit by Tyll over at innerfidelity.com where he made some comparisons in his article.  He also noted that the CAL had undergone some changes and possibly made it a bit better -- which I suspect the changes to the CAL may have been done in the past year, or so.

 

Also, we can't forget that the Denon "D" series was made by Fostex.  We know that they make the somewhat famous T50RP headphones and some others.  Any other insight?

 

I've had the CAL in my hands on two separate occasions while shopping at the MicroCenter, but I just couldn't move forward with finalizing the purchase.  I'm not sure what may have held me back at the time.  Granted, the MicroCenter has a great return policy - but, I also hate to abuse it as I really like it when I purchase a product that I think is horrible and it's great to have the option to return it in those somewhat-rare times.

If they retuned the Cal, I'm not sure?  I'll find out in a few days. 

I had both the Denon and " Old" Cal at the same time.  The difference basically I believe had to do with the cup size and cables.

The Cal have a slightly deeper cup which makes the Bass a tad deeper but it is Flabby.  The Denon doesn't extend as deep but is much tighter.  Also the Cal's Mid range is a tad more forward sounding.  The Denon has a slightly bigger V-shape..  The highs were basically the same to my ears..

 I prefer the Denon because of the tighter Bass and bigger V...Some prefer the other...  again, another taste issue..

Wow, I got home so drunk that I don't even remember writing in this thread. Apparently I just had dinner, saw the thread, wrote in it and passed out tongue_smile.gif It seems that things have been normal for the past 2 hours. Anyway, the s500 is awesome and I'm not just saying that coz I got it straight from Japan for only $37. I hope we'll get back on track without any more racial or obesity stereotypes. I'm going back to sleep, so you all have a good night.

Thanks Currawong for unlocking the thread. I think. Hope guys will be cool from this point on. I like to think these HA-S500 is well deserving of this thread. Lets keep it that way shall we?

I'm very thankful for D bringing this thread about. I was just mentioning to my co-worker today how the S500 has been my last stop for quite a few months. My S500s still put all my other HPs in the closet. The bone stock S500s do sound a bit congested compared to an open HP in a side by side comparison but with some mods they are very very awesome! And will duke it out with Senns best "Portable" the HD 25s but for $150-300 less.
