I don't know. I thought that telling them they were for my nipples was perfectly normal. I don't get it either!

So glad to hear that you are digging this combo, so now for the million dollar question: How are those Philips Uptowns doing for you? tongue_smile.gif

You know what? The Uptowns are very good, but very different sounding than the S500's. The sound is not nearly as forward as the S500's and seems a more distant, whereas the S500's are more in your face. But the soundstage is wider and more expansive with the Uptowns, and once my ears get used to the sound, I find them to be very nice and enjoyable to listen to. They are less fatiguing to me than the S500's - I can have them cranked up pretty loud for long periods of time without any problem, whereas with the S500's, when I crank them up loud (because they sound so friggin good!), my ears tend to get a bit fatigued after a while (actually, not as much now with the HM5 pads, so that's awesome). The Uptowns bass is very big and expansive, whereas the S500's bass is more punchy and detailed. Sometimes I imagine that the Uptown's bass is the kind of sound that you would get out of a tube amp (even though I have never heard a tube amp lol!). They are harder to drive though, so I have been quite a bit happier with them nowthat I am using them with the E11. So in summary, the S500's and the Uptowns both sound great to me, but in very different ways. So I'm afraid that I am stuck with both of them tongue.gif

.................................................... too far.  eek.gif

Glad you are enjoying both, man i would have scored a set of those uptowns for $50 if not for my damn superluxes hanging around.  Can't justify owning more sets that don't blow my S500s away. haha Next set/s are going to be a huge leap in sound and as it seems in price as well.  Cuz out doing these modded S500s is gonna be a tall order to fill. deadhorse.gif

I want to be careful and not label it as such, but I have not used the HA-S500 without amplification yet.  I have my Sansa Fuze, but the JVCs have not been plugged directly into that device.  I have a few other DACs on the way to try, too.  The $18.00 "Wonder" ETE DAC, the Muse DAC, etc.  I've used the Magni with my Squeezebox, which has Burr-Brown DACs and the sound was quite good.  Yet, the Burr-Brown DACs that the Squeezebox devices were built around, tend to be showing their age a bit and people are discussing them less and less.

I think only if I were to get super-critical, then, I could probably put a label to some of these devices.  Yet, for the money, the Magni / Modi seems like an awfully good buy to me.  I have owned 3 Objective2 amps in the past, which I liked, but there was a bit of frustration with the front-panel jacks, which were 3.5mm and required an adapter to get to RCA, etc.  With the Magni / Modi, I just I'm just happy to have regular RCA plugs in the back of the devices, and a standard 1/4" jack on the front of the amp.

They work very well out of just a Sansa's headphone-out, actually. I've used mine with rockboxed Clip Zips and a rockboxed e280, and for that matter the HO of my various iPods and Samsung Android  devices too.  I've watched quite a few movies on my Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus using the S500.

That said, they sound great out of my FiiO E11 and E6, and the digiZoid ZO as well. I guess I haven't found a situation yet where they didn't work well....lol

LOL!

He probably goes to Ann Summers to get those rings then ph34r.gif

EDIT: btw guys, I've decided to take the ATH Pleathers off after 2 weeks of listening. I feel that the bass lacking is just a bit too much. For a while, I did enjoy the new airy and open sound signature but after this time I feel like it takes away a fundamental quality of these headphones. Which is of course, serious CNT bass presentation. Crisp and vibrant.

So, tonight I'm putting the stock pads back on and indulging myself in luscious Carbon Nanotube bass sound from now on. L3000.gif

I went on my epic ring journey yesterday and found a pair. But as you can see from your picture, I needed at least another pair. Good thing the ones I ordered from ebay came in today LOL!

Jumped on the Hype train again and boy what a bad one..AGAIN!!!

Been using these all day and I must say they are REALLY bad...Bloated Bass Galore, The Mids are pulled too far back and the Treble, Where is the sparkle/definition?  The soundstage is terrible as well.  These sound in a word, Extremely Congested.

The Bass just seems to smear the rest of the spectrum, but not in a good way.  They have almost a veil sound to them, Not A Senn veil.. It's hard to explain..

I know we all have are own opinions, I even put a shout out to the guy who said he likes these better then the HD800's. As it is his opinion.  So mine about these are the opposite.  My point of Reference is the Denon AH-D 1000 which in my opinion is one of the best sounding cans that have even been made under $150..  The Foster/Fostex Drivers are simply Amazing!!!

I've been using these amped and unamped...Via Matrix M-Stage W LT 1364 > Marantz CD 5004

I don't believe in the whole burn in thing either, I've used these about 8 hrs today with no change.

Plus I've yet to see one Review stating after 200+ HRs my cans sound horrible.  Every so called " Burn in" always having the cans sound better...Makes ya wonder Eh, But that's another topic.

To me: These = A $50 set, No giant killer by any means...  Other $50 sets sound better IMO of course...

Just my 2 Cents!!!

haha SUCKA!!!

On a serious note, what you are hearing was exactly what i heard on open box. Go back find and read my impressions on this thread.  Keep listening to them for the rest of the day, they will change on you within a day or 2, maybe even within couple of hours.

Or you can completely stop listening and burn them in with quick/ heavy bass tracks on the highest/ max volume you got. I can already predict you are going to be floored by it's sound after a week of use compared to your initial impressions.

Great open-box impressions, and welcome to our beloved S500s thread. biggrin.gif

BTW this territory is...

Yeah, I haven't read the whole thread, Hell it's like 200+ pages.  I don't know man, Maybe the sound isn't just my cup of tea or maybe the hype got me expecting more.  There are many posts claiming this is " Good, Better,Best...

But I'll give them a shot...If not I'll just give them to my son or whatever....

Personally I don't think the change is going to happen, My ears have adjusted already, but well see...I'll come back in a few days.

The Cans aren't " Horrible" but just not as good as the " Hype"...  Good for $50, I'm thinking!
