The term pleather ("plastic leather") is a slang term for synthetic leather made of plastic. It's a marketing term invented to confuse the unwary.

This doesn't mean there's anything wrong with "ATH pleathers". They're just not related in any way to leather.

True but I find my iPhone's normal output jack to be a bit less bright than the LO/Amp.  Also, I noticed and I get better fullness in sound at around the same volume level via the LO/Amp.  It's my dedicated music device/backup phone.  My primary phoned are Galaxy S2X and BB9900.

I ordered the AKG pads also.  The pads on these are good but a tad stiff.

Yeah, except none of them are available for mobile. Sheesh - you're gonna force me to hook up to my computer, aren't you. ;-)

Sorry, I'm in missionary mode, can't help it (you have an android phone, Galaxy, should be able to watch/listen, no?)

Yeah, I realized that also, good thing I did. For anyone who reads this post, you can get 5% off with the coupon "fb2012fiver", so it will come out to be $16.15 when I buy it tomorrow - not bad!

Yo D, if you can get em to sound half as good as my 5 min Magic Tape Mod you'll be floored by these again.

I actually don't consider myself a "basshead", but I am in the camp that feels ety's, while having beautiful mids and highs, leave the bass lacking, you can hear an articulated bass note, but not with the weight that really anchors most music. The JVC's with pleather are similar in that respect, the bass is there, but looses its punch. Have to go back in this thread and reread the other mods (though I was intimidated just changing pads...)

The first thing I did this morning is place some scotch tape over the 3 vent holes on the driver cups..So the bass comes back in a big way. For the guys that want the comfort of the ATH pleathers and miss the bass of the stock pads this is a great way to bring the bass back. For me I actually like the less bass of the stock ATH pleathers.. I am gonna try it with only 2 vents taped. ect. But this is impressive just how much bass comes back. Give it a try guys it is as easy as cutting out the right shape of tape and slapping it on the vent holes. Easy.

More interesting. I just threw on my ATH velours. The bass is still there..With the tape mod I can use the velours again. Nice. It opens up the overall sound a bit more than the pleathers yet retains the bass end. Nice indeed. For the guys that want ultimate comfort and want that bass. This tape mod does the trick. In fact with this tape mod I actually prefer the velours now.. For the guys that own the ATH velours I hope you all still have them. This tape mod make them perfection. The ever changing HA-S500.

Very interesting. Please let me know if your impressions of the ATH velours and tape mod change. If not, then I will be looking for the ATH velours online!

Edit#1: I'm pretty sure these are them (based on an earlier post by you):

Edit#2: I hope so - just bought them lol!

Btw, I found musubi1000's original link showing pics of the tape job (indeed, even myself or doctorjazz can handle that mod lol!):

Without the tape mod. The velours has almost no bass to speak of. The Pleathers brought some back but for many guys that want a more fuller bass end it might have been a bit more neutral than they wanted. So this tape mod brings back the bass end I think to the same levels of the stock pads which makes sense as the stock pads was covering the vents underneath for the bigger bass. This mod allows for the ATH velours to be just that .. Velours. Like pillows on your ears and on top of that maintain the same level of bass that was on the stock pads. I also noticed it opens up the stage of sound a bit too. Giving the sound a more fuller presence. I like what I am hearing and I forgot how comfy these velours are. That being said. I don't think it is a real necessity to buy velours as the pleather pads are comfy enough but I do like the warm fuzzy feeling of velours especially now that it is getting colder.
