That's interesting about the bass. Your's must be "broken" cuz i had to turn down the bass setting on my clip to A/B the two. Both phones have an emphasized mid-bass. Maybe you are a "basshead" and the S500 might be a tad more emphasized especially with stock pads?
Anyway I don't really want to try to convince anybody that one is better than the other. They are different sounds with the Downtown having better midrange presentation and more relaxed highs. They are different and I happen to like the differences in the Phillips a bit more than I LIKE the S500.
@baardker - Don't get me wrong I still think the S500 is a great buy but even for $50 I would chose the uptowns with all considered. Mind you many people have paid over $120 from bestbuy for the uptown and at that price I would say the S500 is for sure the better bang for your buck.

I'm glad you like the Uptowns. I only paid $40 for mine and they were super comfortable, so I actually wish I liked them better.

Geez sorry guys.... I didn't realize I wasn't allowed to have an opinion about any other headphone once I signed in on the "S500 thread"...... I didn't realize I was signing in BLOOD!....

It's alright guys. I can see that I am no longer wanted here just because I like another headphone in the world besides ONLY the S500. I can accept it...... I'll just go off and make my own little S500 thread so I can post little impressions to myself.... like when my brainwavz pads finally arrive (waiting 3 weeks now) ill post a little impression to myself.... maybe ask myself a few questions.... who knows... frown.gif

No worries Doc. There is no rule around here saying we all have to be fans of whatever that is the topic of the thread..I think it is natural to seek out better sound for you. It is what this hobby is about. We never kick out members of a thread because of any unnatural love they have for another phone. In fact it is very natural. We all have our likes and dislikes about a sound and I am guilty of doing the same. Always looking to see what is next.

 

Let the first person that is not guilty of this throw out the first rock.

Well, everybody's ears are different. No matter the pad swaps, there is no such thing as the perfect headphone, as far as I know. Maybe your ears are more sensitive to highs than some of the others here.....and therefore the other 'phones suit you better. I'll still talk to you though....lol

Damn doc you late to the party on this one, it went from $20 to $27 on amazon within days. LoL Hype train is officially gonna take off now. Still a crazy good deal for $27 from how others are describing it. Might even get mine from amazon today, will see............. go go go before it goes up to $30 something.

And sfwalcer, that $40 Uptown deal was through JR.com. They had them new at that price for a few hours, before all the head-fiers snatched them up. I should have bought more, especially since I sold them for a nice profit!

I helped by buying it just now lol.

Hey, anyone try the "brown paper towel" mod? smily_headphones1.gif
It holds up better and stiffer than the white napkin paper,
and keeps its's shape so doesnt get worn down easy.
