Just a real quick fyi. I finally heard the S400. Great mids (a bit more forward than the S500 to my ears), but a bit too light on the bass for my ears. Granted this S400 wasn't burned in at all, but I think my preference leans more toward the S500.

Quote:You are getting it all wrong WAYNE, these cheapos are helping noobs to save their $$$s so they can move on and not be tempted by those $300 cans.

.......But this only works if you buy and never visit head-fi and these thread ever again. ha
@ ericp
The bass on the S400s are not as prominent as the S500s but they are enough. And with those AKG pads it sounds similar to the FXD70s (well almost) after some burn in. CRAZY for like $20, i thinks these are better/ more refined than the FX40s for sure.

Everything has more detail/clarity/aire than the AT leather pads, bass quantity about the same as the AT leathers, better quality though!

The left 1st flat piece from the Beyer DT250 combo in the pic below goes onto back of the AKG pads of the S500/S400 and the shure 840 pads wraps over the AKG pads with that flat piece holding them in place. Nice, nice.

Now you got it!

Quote:Have you ever tip rolled an IEM.........I am just pad rolling....manufacturer didn't do the best job selecting the pads unfortunately.....nothing wrong with better comfort and a sig that makes each individual happy. Not only just $23.99 in price but several sound signatures can be obtained in one headphone.....and this is quite the headphone...others make these claims as well, so is everyone wrong.....they are worth a listen!

Quote:+1 on the leaning......I got the S400 as well and wasn't too impressed, but the rolled paper towel under the AKG pads give more bass, and clarity to mids/highs, and a bigger soundstage and separation, yep heard it myself! But the S500 with my pad mods rule, good, better, best and impressed!

Cute basically did a pad-on-pad mod, with the AKG pads on the bottom and the Shure 840 pads wrapped over them. Since the 840s pads are too big and don't wrap over the AKGs, cute used the flat piece oval plastic thing from that Beyer DT250 combo to secured it.1.) The Beyer DT250 oval plastic thing goes onto the S500/S400 drivers.
2.) AKG pads are then placed on the S500/S400 with the Beyer DT250 plastic piece behind it.
3.) Then put the Shure 840 pads over the AKG ones which is secured onto that plastic piece thing.
Basically like a sandwich with the AKG pads in the middle, the Beyer DT250 plastic piece on the vary bottom and the Shure pads on the top.

This mod will not please everyone as much as me......I like mids, vocals, aire/separation, instrament placement, makes them closer to the FXD80 only bigger and better like full size headphones, and this makes the sound more to my liking, more neutral, slightly analytical....bassheads beware, bass is there when needed, tight, detailed and better quality!

hmmmm, that's interesting maybe this mod is not for me then, since I loves my bass too much. Good to know how this mod works regardless.
