How do S400 + AKG K81 pads vs S500 stock pads compare in bass response? Like can you get a significant bump in bass for S400 to bring it to S500 levels?

Just tested it out With the AKGs and the stock pads to my ears is about 2db lower in bass quantity over the stock pad configuration of the HA-S500. The HA-S500 has the bigger bass for certain. The HA-S400 sound like great dynamic portables the HA-S500 sound more like a full sized can.
Â
Interestingly enough I threw on the ATh leather pads on the HA-S500 and it lowers the bass end like 2dbs. from stock pads. Mids stand out much more because less bass presence.

@Dsnuts.....I all over the over the pad mod by cyloh.....been testing/listening to my S400 and S500 today, and using my W1000X pads over the velour pads on both of these (sound best with the velour over stock or AT leathers, unreal balance and clarity)......I am finding same results on both pairs, bigger soundstage, more air/space, outstanding vocals/mids....a real improvement. I have two pair of Shure 840 pads (same as Brainwavz HM5), that I will have in my hands by friday......stay tuned, comfort and full size headphone sounds! What I am hearing is what I imagined a full size Carbon Nanotube JVC would be!- Dsnuts

Are the 840 pads and the HM5 pads really the same? The lip of the HM5 pads looked bigger in those pics. The Shure pads are cheaper and easier to get (prime from Amazon). I have a set on my newly purchased Sonys from the Staples deal.

So interestingly enough, I got the ATH pleathers on and... not too happy about what they do for the low end. Â Yes, they open the phones up.
Â
*But* and I'm quite happy with this discovery, my new Galaxy Nexus phone has a headphone out I'm none too pleased with for most of the things I throw at it. Â The S500s with the ATH pleathers just so happen to be a great match. Â With most things I try the low end is a bit boomy/bloated, with this combo, it sounds just right. Â Not the last word in refinement but a great combo when I'm in an area with no wifi and listen to mog on the phone.

Have you tried the 840 pads on your S500? From the google searches I did, according to others on headfi, they are the same. Only way to be sure is to get both and compare......maybe someone here has both! The 840/HM5/M50 pads are the same from what I have found!post #2140 of 651810/9/12 at 12:39pm- gideonMorrison

Thanks for clearing that up......nice pics, don;t look the same, but are they interchangable, size wise? I have been using a pair of ATH-W1000x pads for testing on the S400 and S500, and they are much larger than any of those in the pics! Just trying for the "cyloh mod", not particular for the same pad (HM5) that he used!

While I wait and wait for my S500's, I thought I would do as you said and try out the FX40. I got them at FutureShop (Canada). They were normally $39 but $10 off so $29. Even though I am not really an iem kind of guy, for $29, I couldn't think of any reason not to try them out. I have some older Skullcandy crappy iems, and some Samsung Galaxy iems (not as crappy). But they always fall out of my ears, don't isolate well, don't sound great, and are generally annoying. My initial impressions of the FX40 though is that I really like how they fit, and they isolate very well, and they sound is pretty good! I find them somewhat treble happy and somewhat lacking in bass (compared to my awesome modded ksc75's lol!), but possibly the burn in will help with that? Regardless, they are easy to listen too and sound quite good (and will only get better with burn in). So for the price they are definitely keepers. Thanks!
Â
And because I didn't want to be left out of the party, I also got the clip zip. Sadly though, the jack seems whack. Depending on how I jiggle it, I get either the left channel or the right channel. So I'll have to return it and try out another clip. It will be quite interesting to see how it compares to my Samsung Galaxy S2 with PowerAmp app (which to me sounds quite good).
When you get the clip I'd be interested in the difference in sound quality between the two. I have a Galaxy Nexus with Poweramp and it sounds really good. I'm definitely considering the clip though.

I haven't tried them on my S500, but I will when I get home in a few hours. The HM5 pads look bigger and cushier in those photos, but the 840 pads are very comfortable so I'll see if they work.

Funny, some people at my job just asked me if I would recommend some good but cheap headphones that people can use here for dictation and listening to recordings. Of course I recommended the S400.. lol. So I'll be ordering some soon (about 7 pairs and get to hear it for free). Great timing!!
