I took my laptop loaded with music and my Fire Phoenix DAC and my HA-S500 to my fathers place. We are talking old school audiophile. The man makes his own amp level here. The man still has his reel to reel, record players is what we are talking about. Speaking of which. He proceeded to show me his newest Amp concoction. The thing was roughly the size of the E11 but a big volume nob and switches on it. It had a box underneath it so a double stack box. He tells me with one charge it will last an entire month. Lol. Anyway back to the test.

I set up my meager laptop next to his wall of audio equipment and proceed to crank up some tunes to let the old man try it out. I couldn't get it off his head..He immediately realized how great the HA-S500 sounds but with my DAC combination. See that is the issue with every thing that I let him try. He ends up liking it and taking it away from me. Now I have to order him a pair..So it passed the old man test..

He was equally impressed with the DAC as with the HA-S500. Together they make an unbelievable sounding combo.

Great info! -  looks like Fire Phoenix DAC is no sluch either. Next time you are at your dad's place, thank him in my name for having such great reviewer for his son. It obviously runs in the family.

I found HA-S 500s to be quite sensitive to the output impedance of the amp driving them. Any info on the output impedance of the Fire Phoenix ?

The listed specs are on this page. It is perhaps one of the best audio purchases for me ever. It has transformed my entire music collection to something new and that is amazing. I ended up getting a USB to Optical out box as well to get the full on 24bit service from this box. It sounds marvelous with just the USB to think it will be even that much better with COAX and or Optical out..I haven't been this surprised with an audio purchase since well since forever it seems. I have never heard my music this good. It is surprising just how much a good DAC can transform your music.  Ihttp://www.ebay.com/itm/FIRE-PHOENIX-DAC-02-CS4398-LM4562-MINI-USB-DAC-Headphone-Amplifier-/180738679826?pt=US_Pro_Audio_Amplifiers&hash=item2a14dd6412n a bit of bad news. They threw in what was supposed to be a high end USB cable. Gold plated and such. Only to find out it was over heating my DAC box and cutting out my music. I switched the USB to one I had in hand and it fixed all issues. SO if you guys end up trying out this Fire Phoenix be wary of the throw in junk of a USB cable.

HHmmmm? Do you think it works the other way around? Optical output to USB input? Like a DVD player to the Fire Phoenix?

Coax or Optical in I should say. lol. Sorry for the mess up. Watching some football as I type. Ya you can certainly hook up your digital players using coax or optical out to the DAC.  I have my music files on my laptop which has no optical out so I got me a converter.  This thing here. http://www.ebay.com/itm/290710781463?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649 Another one of Kiteki's suggestions. Can't wait to try this box out with the DAC. A high end optical cable is cheap on ebay too.

For anyone that is still skeptical: I have never liked on-ear headphones before. I spent a little while finding the perfect spot to rest these headphones on my ears and they sound AMAZING! At first they were uncomfortable, so I did a lot of adjusting. Once I found that "sweet spot" these headphones are so comfortable. The details and nuance are unbelieveable. You can picture the room that they are playing in, it's insane for this price range.

My friend has a pair of $120 Sol Republics and these are DEFINITELY better. I'll give a more detailed explanation after some more listening.

And I can't thank Dsnuts enough for convincing me to buy these. They were exactly what I was looking for.

Cheers my friend. You are hearing them as I am. I can't begin to tell you how these sound on my newly acquired Fire Phoenix DAC. You guys think I am kidding when I say I might have reached sound nirvana but it has to be something close to what I am hearing from this combo. A $50 headphone and a $90 DAC. lol. Just ridiculous. Other headphones sound great on it but something about the HA-S500 and the DAC that just jives really well. The sound is energetic, detailed, spacy with layers of music that otherwise would go unnoticed. Going back to my portable rig after this. It is just unfair. lol. I noticed Bass even though greatly reduced by using the ATH velours especially sub bass is still very quality..I don't feel I am missing anything with this combo. Very satisfactory sound. Unheard of actually for the price of admission.

Source in this case throws the sound of the HA-S500 into overdrive..Try using your HA-S500 with some power behind them. Full ranged sound is just the beginning.

Good luck with that method rickdohc!

As for me, I already gave in to Dsnuts, the pied piper. My Fire Phoenix shipped Friday. Since the S500 are my current favorite headphones, I'm willing to follow in his footsteps a bit longer. :)

I will be standing next to you screaming:

You need a DAC now..

You need a DAC now..

Anyways thank you Dsnuts for the DAC discovery. I will be getting the iBasso PB2+DB2 combo soon and do a comparo with the FX40 and the S500.

Would be interesting if this $100 David stands up against the $500 Goliath.

Damn I wish the Fire Phoenix dac was a portable. LoL Hey Dsnuts can you post some pics of the usb connection from your lappy to that dac/ the back view instead of the front? So all you have to do is use a usb cable to connect from one of the usb ports on your computer to the dac to get audio??? Kinda confused cuz never used usb for audio before so.... Oh and I noticed that the back of Fire Phoenix has lots of connections for lots of different sources, I wanna ask if anyone knows if you can connect it to your ipod/ mp3 player's 3.5mm audio jack via a cable like this and plug it into the 2 RCA plugs ie;the red/ white round ports of the dac???

Thanks!

This is a noob question but just let's say my laptop/PC comes with standard sound card. Does a DAC replace it as the primary source?

hello, Had been looking for a headphone for quite some time for a lower budget but after reading 76 pages, ive decided to bit the bullet, spend some more cash and buy this. Though im a bit undecided between the 400 and 500. Does anyone have any idea when these will be out in the uk. Amazon seems to be empty
