Part of why the Sony R10 sounds as amazing as it does (or did before any wear over time) is due to its MASSIVE earcups that were shaped in a very specific way. This allowed it to have a concert-hall type of presentation and enhanced timbre without being an open design. Looking at the cups on the D7100, I'm having a hard time imagining how they'd sound remotely spacious or acoustically satisfying.

They look kind of pathetic, tbh.

Again if the D600 is an indicator, I was pleasantly surprised by the soundstage for a closed headphone.

Funny that you mentioned Rush.  I never heard them sound as good as with the D600, especially vocals from Geddy Lee.

I haven't heard Peart's drums sound better with any phone other than D5K. When he hits that big old floor tom, the perceived power and depth is just amazing. D5K is absolutely a premium RUSH can. Thanks for the report on D600, I may end up getting a pair when they hit $400.

Fyi, I haven't heard the D5000, but for me the advantage of the D600 was having similar sound quality in a portable, so if you would not be using the D600 as a portable, it may be redundant (or even a step down depending on your taste) if you alreadly own the D5000, IMO.

they are already $400. Thats how much I got mine for from J&R. They price matched earphones solutions and also has free shipping

I'd expect the prices to get much lower too. The MSRP is probably 100% higher than invoice. I'd expect retailers to drop a bit.

I don't wish to diminish the old Dx000 Denons by any means, but it seems that there is some glorification going on. Some time ago, before they were discontinued, I did some research on the D5000 & D7000: It seemed to be the general consensus that they were pretty good, but suffered from somewhat bloated bass, resonances and harsh treble - even they only seemed to be considered great sounding when modded with some additional dampening. Aftermarket earpads and earcups also were hugely popular for those models.
Now that they are discontinued, it seems that there are many fans defending them, with the result that the aforementioned issues are overlooked. I'm not particularly trying to defend the new Denons, especially since I can't compare them to the older ones. Still, it seems that there are quite a few people here with the supernatural ability to judge headphones by pictures alone...

Sorta doubt it. That never really happened with the D5000/D7000. In fact, the prices seemed to get higher after they were initially released.

I agree with the nostalgia factor and seem to be in the minority that I think the D600 and D7100 are great looking headphones.

Step down would not be a good thing at all. I really need to read a detailed report from someone with both.

$500 too high...............$350-$400 I can stomach if they perform.

Have you ever spent a good amount of time with D5K? Obviously, this is not a cheap hobby and my guess is that poor source's and poor amplification can largely account for the negative reports. My gear is adequate and I've never experienced the above mentioned pitfalls.

The only mod I made to my D5K was to add a 3mm thick ring inside the pads as seen here: http://www.head-fi.org/t/558782/denon-d2000-d5000-d7000-stock-pad-mod-for-wider-sound-stage

The sound stage did improve very slightly, but more importantly for me, the pad has filled out with some firmness and the mushy feel disappeared. Much better fit for me. The D600 pads look fairly mushy too.

As far as the new sets go, as long as they sound on par or exceed the old line, I have no issue with looks................we really need some good comparative reviews!

When they were initially released it was MSRP. $1000 for the D7000 was something I never saw after the initial release. The prices fluxuated some, but never stayed that high. I talked with enough vendors to verify from multiple the invoice they got on the D7000 was $500.

Seems there's a lot of owners of the new DX100 headphones that are trying to defend their purchase instead of trying to be objective about them.
