I think I no longer have a problem. At least I'm not you.....or rather, your wallet.

I kept those for a lengthy 10 months until March 2012 when I bought the Beyerdynamic T5p.
In May 2012 I bought both the Fiio E17 and Grado Sr325i.
Hit June and I bought both the AKG Q701 and Shure SE535.
Hit end of July/beginning of august and I just finished paying for the O2+ODAC with a pair of HD800 and a pair of LCD2 on the way
Of course I well off my older pairs as I go along, at this point I'll only be owning the LCD2 + HD800 + SE535 with the E17 for portable amping and the O2+ODAC for home use.
I've had a serious urge to get a nice tube amp too >.<

I think I'll start on a home rig when I finish my portable rig. I'm shooting high though. Estimated final MSRP costs of my setup would probably be in the 2,500-2,800 depending on how much the cable costs me. Double Helix Cables might be very expensive.

I hope you enjoy those headphones man, I listened to the HD 800's and LCD 2's at a Head-Fi meet and they were both quite nice, just way too power hungry to use with my current rig, and I already had to get rid of my Denon D2000's because they were too large and inconvenient

My wallet took a big hit, but it's also when I started my job (which is low paying...).
I also forgot the Cardas cable I bought >.>

You can get a wonderful rig with 10k -especially if you happen to shoot film), one that I could easily live with for the rest of my life at least... (leica not included of course, but they seem to tend more toward the luxury products category than the photographic gear category these days)

Of course I got your point, and I must say the other examples that you presented seem valid as far as I know. But I still think that 10K$ for a pair of headphones is too much. especially since you can get 95% of the performance with a third of that budget.. I mean, the same could be said from cars vs airplanes. A guy with a 1.6M$ Bugatti veyron could very well say that his car's pretty cheap compared to another guy's Airbus A340. He would be right. With 1.6M$ you can get the fastest car available, certainly not the best airplane around... But does that make the Veyron any  cheaper?

I was more using examples I see around Head-fi of other hobbies. Also having finally heard the top and previously being if the '95% there' mindset I can safely say that to my ears the 009 is certainly more than 5% better. I'd also say at a third of the price is an exaggeration.

4500 was what the LF + HD800 costs and though it was very good the 009 + LL is flat out better to my ears. Not like an A/B 'I don't know' kind of thing.

Point is I'd say about half that gets you 80% there. wink.gif

As for photography you can of course get something amazing for 10k but not THE BEST.

Tomorrow my diyMod ships from the person doing the modification in the same state as me. I can't wait to get it. Hopefully it only takes a day or two to get to me.

If by "the best" in photography you mean leica or digital medium format then yes, you're right. But there's no question that every product the leica pushes these days is overpriced. and medium format is a niche within a niche and only works if you exclusively do studio/landscape photography.

But you can buy a D800 (or D4) + lenses and still have a lot of bucks left to buy a nice compact mirrorless such as the fuji x100.

And, if you're willing to try film photography, you can get a mamiya 7 with some lenses, a contax G2 kit and still have some dough to burn on a great 5x4 setup of you to get the extra resolution.

I've not heard the setup you're talking about so I cannot comment, but you can get a great setup with 3300$ (sr007 +srm323 etc...) and even more if you're wiling to go the diy route..

I put my order in today for a Tera Player. I found an old excel sheet I made a few months ago of my dream rig setup and the cost estimations. I realized my setup will cost about $1000 more than expected when I'm done in a month from now.

I think for headphones that's it for a while.
I might consider a trade of the LCD2 for the DX1000 but I don't see it happening (haven't visited the for sale forums since I got the LCD2 to avoid any more purchases).

Then possible a nicer DAC/AMP if I can afford it but I'd only get something I've tried at this point (going to a meet in a week where I'll get to try some "higher end" models).

After that I'll focus more on some investments / other items I've had my eye on (a nicer camera mainly).

Little update, cancelled my order for a new Tera Player. Got a pre-owned one from a member at a good price. Should arrive tomorrow :-) Already thinking about upgrading my vinyl rig to be able to make my own Vinyl Rips at home......and here I thought I was going to stay away from all that stuff. Hopefully I can make do for a little while as my wallet needs time recover/find the perfect aftermarket IEM cable to use with my portable rig.

Also, my Aurisonic AS-1's should arrive this week, which means I may need to find a very small amp to help tweak the treble so it pairs well with the Tera Player, or just go with the AS-2's for the Tera Player and the iPod Classic -> Chris_Himself LOD -> FiiO E17 (with treble boost on) -> AS-1's as a secondary rig

GGGuuuuuyyyyysss xO
It's happening again.
got my paycheck and for the first time in several weeks I check the for sale forum and I'm about to get a Q cable for my LCD2 xO
Stop me =(

Do It! lol, you don't need to get a cable just yet. Maybe it may be worth getting a cable you can get adapters for so you can use it with your HD800's and LCD2's. Then the purchase would be more justified.
