Can I send subwoofer signal to a 2nd receiver?

tell me if this will work, or if there are problems with it....

I don't have any money for a subwoofer right now, but I would like to try setting my mains to Small and diverting my bass signal to a dedicated speaker with its own power supply (which is all an active sub really is). I have an old Panasonic receiver, and a couple of old speakers that can get down to about 45Hz, which isn't sub level but should suffice for most music. Can I just send the subwoofer signal from the sub line-out on my Yamaha receiver to an Aux line-in on my Panasonic receiver, and let it take the bass load off of my Yamaha? It sounds like a harmless idea to me, but am I neglecting something?

Should work.

The logic is correct, but using an old receiver like that will likely be noisy, more distortion than you might want to tolerate.

Watch the speakers impedence as well.

In the end the only damage you can do is to that old amp and/or old speakers that you're using, so why not give it a shot, right?

Well, the old receiver actually isn't so "old," and it has pretty good specs regarding distortion, etc. The older speakers were actually designed to go with it perfectly, so there shouldn't be an impedence mismatch there. But you're right, I don't care if I fry the old stuff, as long as my new stuff can't be hurt.

Just for fun a few years ago, I made a 12" sub and I used a Pioneer receiver to power it as I did not have the extra $$$ for a dedicated sub amp. I connected the line in on the Pioneer to the sub line out on my main Sony 5.1 recvr. Popped in the Matrix, and the walls were shakin.

Should work OK.

Well, it didn't work out after all, because the input jacks on the Panasonic (both pairs of them) are dead! They won't accept a signal from my receiver or anywhere else.

So now, either I buy a small sub and hope I can tame its acoustics enough that the downstairs neighbors don't have me thrown out (and they may be hearing standing waves regardless of how low I have the volume), or I can find some cheap little amp at a garage sale or Goodwill or wherever and run my subwoofer signal out to that. eBay is too scary a place for me.
