2012 Olympic Opening Ceremonies - Your Opinions

O.K. guys, what did you think? I am watching it now and, frankly, I find it kind of boring. Of course, I respect all of the effort put into this by the English people but it just seems to be all over the place and a bit too kitsch. In contrast, I just loved the Beijing Olympic opening ceremonies. I wish I could say the same thing here.

I liked them. I thought it took a different approach from China, which was smart and I liked the narrative thing. YMMV.

I think the general opinion was good reviews. Personally, I thought it was great. But keep in mind, that I do not take ceremonies seriously as real entertainment. In that regard, I am easily pleased.

But if I were to judge it seriously, I thought it was cutting edge with a mix of corniness that pretty much exists in every ceremony. The British have a good sense of humor and sassiness and they communicated the good vibes over all. They showed  the world that they love to have fun. Perhaps it didn't have the sparkle of the Beijing ceremony but since I am a fan of British pop culture, it was a great treat. I was happy.

I thought it was very boring. I just don't think the opening ceremony should dig that deep artistically with subtleties, etc. I thought it would make an amazing play, but was not a sports, spartan, let the games begin kind of show. I mean healthcare systems and Harry Potter WTH? I get the whole theme and narrative, but its just not the venue.

I thought it was great. Some parts like the pop music I didn´t like though. Maybe I am elitistic or something but I do listen to all kind of crap it´s not that. As for HP and health care. I didn´t know GB was great with health care. Rowlings sold a helluva lot of books so I guess it´s good for the younger audience to have that in.

Except for that it was great until the long and booring parade. I was busy playing Medieval Total War 2 but put on the show so I got to see the lighting of the fire. That is always fun seeing how they try to one up eachother for every olympics in this regard. Thought this rose was pretty cool so I do feel they succeeded doing something new :)

I don´t remember Beijing honestly at least we didn´t get any fake singers this time only mr Bean cheating as always. What I did miss was Monty Python but the humour was there.

One thing that I am curious about bad reviews is that are these reviewers really complaining or is it just whimsical reviews? Do people actually take these ceremonies seriously? In my encounters, I have not met one single person in my life who actually takes Olympic ceremonies seriously. It's all superficial candy right?

If I'm wrong and you do take it seriously, please correct me.

I was playing a gig that night and missed the opening ceremonies. I heard it was pretty cool though. But I never really got into it a lot. Just me I guess.

Too much videos, too much pop culture.  Individual sections went on far too long.

I like the idea of Children Literature section a lot; it could have been made really touching -- hospitalised kids are beset with fears they can't even put a name on, and literature allows them to project these amorphous fears and hopefully overcome them.  Unfortunately, that section was framed by a really corny doctor-and-nurse dance that cheapened the whole thing.

Music was much better than Beijing, which isn't saying much.

The lighting of cauldron was marvelous.

As someone from China....other than the Welcome to Beijing song.. That I really liked. I have no idea who made the rest of the pretty lame soundtrack....seriously.......

But hey...the Welcome to Beijing song was so good...that I can overlook it wink_face.gif
