bmitchels is very hard to please. That case of his looks like something an explosives expert would carry around with him :-)

I'd love to hear the HUGO/TH900 though.

Well, i am not sure to have all the "audiophile vocabulary" some people have here, but I will say that the HUGO is much more "airy" if this term make sense.

When I had the HiFi-M8, I prefered AK100>hifi-M8>Tu-05 to AK100>HiFi-M8 Direct.

This seems to say that it was the Amp part of the M8 that I did not like, not the DAC part ...

Very interesting... Tyll seems to like the M8 as a very competent amp. But that was in the context of the HD800 if I remember correctly. Which says nothing about the pairing with the TH900... Hm.

Yup. Which is exactly why I'm seeking fellow TH900 users to ask them which portable amp they liked better with these headphones specifically. Or, at the very least, point out those portable amps which absolutely must NOT be paired with the TH900 (due to the combo creating a horrible sound etc.).

Edit: after reading through countless of threads, I've narrowed down the portable amps to the following:

HeadAmp Pico USB DAC/AMP

- iFi Micro iDSD (not yet available, est. July 2014)

JDS Labs O2+ODAC combo

Leckerton Audio UHA760

iBasso D2/D12/D42? (I have no idea which version is best)

NOT in the running anymore:

Sony PHA 2 (inferior to the competition, amp does not have enough power for certain headphones)

Centrance HiFi-M8 (someone specifically said pairing this amp with the TH900 sounds pretty awful)

Fostex HP-P1 (apparently iPod only)

Personally, I'm leaning toward the iFi Micro iDSD, as it seems to have a lot of unique features within a very reasonable asking price.

I wouldn't bring my TH900s outside if I were you.

Will soon test with a LH Labs Geek Out 720 and let you know how it sounds.

don't forget the Analog square paper TU-05 PORTABLE tube amp.  SUPERBE synergy with the TH900. described here on Head-Fi

I made a "transportable" set-up with those 2 (+ a AK100) and modified the TU-05 to add an XLR headphone-out.

Has anyone tried Graham Slee Solo Ultra Linear DE with TH900's? I'm driving my HD650 with Schiit Vali, and I'm thinking about selling most of my current stuff, and getting a TH900 and some nice solid state amp in <1000€ price range. V200 and Lehmann Audio BCL are on my radar too. Lovely Cube premium has also my curiosity, as it's basically supposed to be the same amp as BCL, but for 1/3 of the price.

Aloha Head-Fi just received my Fostex TH900.  I'm in a hospital right now but I'm using them with the Fostex HPA4 through my MacPro.  They sound great especially downloaded some flacc tracks from the HD site.  The dynamics are great and the detail is spot on.  I do hemodialysis Monday thru Saturday for 3 hours, using the Vamp Vesa from VModa with my IPhone 5S locked on to it.  The Fostex sounds great on it also, enough to keep me smiling as I'm hooked up to the machine.  Enjoy the music.

welcome to the club!.... Wish i had my TH900 when I was in hospital last. I believe that 9 out of 10 physicians recommend the TH900 for hospital use. wink.gifbeerchug.gif

read the thread - and still wonder and have no answer - what dac/amp combo for Fostex th900 should I buy - Fostex HP-F8 or Burson Conductor SL. Could someone write advantages and disadvantages of these options with th900? Thank you!

Asgard: I haven't tried this personally but I find that Schiit's DACs are better than their amps. I tried the Lyr with LCD2.2 and was underwhelmed. TH900 should probably be paired with something better.

For my personal tastes, both Soloist and SL (I owned both and loved them with Mr Speakers Mad Dog 3.2) have a strange sound signature with the TH900 where the bass seems to hit too hard and the midrange sounds very average.

Haven't tried the other two but for that kind of money I would look for a second hand Eximus DP1 which I've heard sounds great with TH900.

If it's still there, Mass Drop has a Bakoon HPA01 for only 1200 and that is a good combo with the TH900. I own the HPA21 and it goes well with TH900.

The Questyle CMA800R is another good amp for it.

For my personal taste I think the Eximus DP1 would be my choice as it brings out the slightly recessed midrange in the TH900 for the most balanced overall sound. This is from what I heard as I haven't tried it myself.

A "budget" option would be the Violectric V200 which is another amp that helps the TH900 emphasize its midrange and delivers a smooth sound. Again I haven't tried this one but I heard that it's the anti-Burson and if that is the case, for the TH900 this would be perfect as the Burson just accentuates the already slight V shape into something that just sounds very unnatural to me.

Again this is just my personal opinion based on my tastes. I like a natural, neutral sound with a very slight emphasis on bass. I do not like too much bass or muddy bass. I do not like harsh treble but I still want enough to deliver sparkle to my music. My opinions are based on my tastes and interpretation.

I hope this helps somewhat.

Say no to Burson! :)   It sounds great on a number of headphones in my opinion but TH900 wasn't one I liked with it. YMMV.
