I own both of 'em and even got the HD 439 ear pads. m50 > HD 449 any day. The HD 449 are easier on the head, though.

Vote ATH M50 +1

I'd been looking at headphones for about a month or so looking on various headphone review sites when i finally came across the Audio-Technica ATH-M50 set.

I was looking for a great pair of headphones between 150 and 300 dollars, so these were on the low end of my search, but i'm glad I made this choice.

HD 439 or m40x? :)

The m40x is way lighter than the m50(x) with a more coherent frequency response. So in terms of sound and comfort, i guess for a lot of people the m40x are the better choice. Compared to the HD 439 the m40x wins, for me at least. But the HD 439 bring very good comfort, even a little better than the m40x due to the lightweight and cloth ear pads and headband, and a likable sound signature to the table as well. So I guess its kind of preference thing. Maybe the HD 439 are better for long term use, because the pleather pads on the m40x are somewhat snug fitting and can get sweaty. The pads on the HD 439 are way more breathable and "airy".

As always its best to try them out at your local audio store.

Can I easily change the pads on the m40x? Also, do I have to get pads specificly designed for the m40x, or I can buy lets say some shure's or sennheiser pads and place them on m40x?

As previous commenter said Senns 439/449 bass lacks control and definition. Last year I wanted to buy Senn HD/439 or 449. I listened to them in the showroom with both Fiio E07k and Fiio X5 as a source. I previously had Senn HD 205-2. I loved the sound of 439 but then the guy from the shop gave me AudioTechnica Ath-WS55. I was speechless and I felt sory for the Senns. I can say the sound of ATH is better in any department. I did not try M-50 though.

Bass mod on the HD439 makes them much better IMHO.  I also have the ATH-WS99 (big brother to the ATH-WS55) and I much prefer them to the modded 439s.  Changing between the two, the 439s sound harsh in comparison.

The pads on the m40x are easily replaceable. I never pad swapped my m50's so I have no personal experience, but from what I read here on head-fi, the Beyerdynamic EDT 250 V Velour Ear Pads should fit. Of course u can always get the original pads from audio technicas website.
