Hmmm.... I prefer keeping things original, that means if I were to buy HD 449, even if the earpad broke, I would definately go with pleather again. Also I noticed the headband is using the pleather too(which cannot be replaced). I sometimes borrow my brother my headphones who sweat easily. So going with HD 439 at the moment(the detachable cable feature is cool)

A lot of people compared the HD 449 to HD 439. They mostly have the same idea ; they both sound almost the same, HD 439 have a better bass respond.

im not a fan of the HD4-- series i feel like the headphone sound is not well bass extended, treble can be a little thin, however i like the M50 a lot more except its narrower soundstage

Still a good choice, i hope the added bass doesnt bother you and yes i like the removable cable and the velour pads will last long, enjoy your new headphones

I must be lost.  I'm listening to my HD439 right now.  The HD449 have LESS bass?  I hear most bass pretty good in the 439, but there are songs that I know very well that have well mixed clean bass lines and I can't even hear the bass in the 439.  Why would they make a more expensive headphone with worse bass response?  Is there anything better about them?

 

I will say that I like the 439 for the price.  They sound very smooth and have good instrument details and separation.  They lack the highest highs and lowest lows, but overall for most music they sound good.  I'll have a pair of M50 to compare next thursday. :-)

ath m50 --> $160 dollars

hd 439 --> $130

hd 449 --> $140

srh440 --> $130

 

What do you recommend? I just want a pair of confortable cans with a decent sound stage. I'm a little worried about the hd 4xxx get broken easily, does it feels cheap build quality?

not sure about the HD400 series but i know that the M50 has terrible soundstage. 
compared to the HD500 series the HD400 surely doesn't feel as well built but it is still decent.

comfort wise the M50 clamps a little more than the HD400 series so i would guess that the senns are more comfortable. but again i'm not sure so don't take my word for it lol. its just my guesstimation from a very brief audition

The senns are definitely more comfortable than the m50. It isn't an uncomfortable headphone per se, but it clamps fairly tight which can get irritating if you're sensitive like I am under the ear...

Well, HD449 has more details than HD439. For most people, details are more important than bass quantity smily_headphones1.gif

i would guess not the M50, i think the srh440 is better but again i have no idea how the srh440 compares to the HD439/449

Happen to audition HD439, ATH-M50 & SRH-440. I enjoy HD439 most. ATH-M50 has no soundstage & details are lacking. SRH-440 give me that "veiled" sound. While I am no basshead but I need that "right amount" of bass. HD439 did it. Do note that HD439 highs are lacking with warm mids & tight lows. Not at all emphasized. smily_headphones1.gif

The m50 lacks mids and mid body/warmth.  It's more bassy than the HDxxx.  The 439 is relatively flat and good overall but lacks the best treble and bass extension at the far ends.  Otherwise very nice for the price.  The 449 I haven't heard, but the graph would indicate it is a 439 with better treble at a minimum.
