IEM =/= earbud. He meant earbuds as in the ones without a silicone-tip insertion.
To answer OP's question, it's because traditional earbuds don't have a huge audiophile market, since it is extremely difficult or perhaps impossible to engineer good sound into them given how they are positioned in our ears.

Oh - you're right, misread that.
Because earbuds are terrible, especially compared to many IEM's in the same price bracket.
How is it flawed? I can't stand the feeling of something stuck in my ear...to me, IEMs are a flawed design because they are not comfortable enough.

Strange, i thought earbuds like the yuin PK/OK series, crossroads HR 1 and 2 were very well regarded...
post #7 of 97/18/12 at 5:41pmThey don't seal to get adequate bass reproduction, and any sound outside of that is severely distorted. IEMs have extremely good isolation for one, which is a very good trait. I actually don't find buds that comfortable either, plus they tend to fall off a lot. If you look at the measurements for the Yuins, even they are pretty bad.

Quote:IEMs aren't a flawed design just because they don't fit YOUR ear. I've tried plenty that I don't like, but plenty others that I didn't even realize I was wearing.
Which is why i said they were a flawed design for me. I tried several expensive IEMs...nothing about the sound impressed me (westones, etymotics, etc), usually too much bass (i don't even like bass). Quickly went back to my yuin pk2s...
