Fostex T50RP Incremental Mods and Measurements - Page 79

post #1171 of 1311

I relly love the new memory foam velour HM5 pads. I've even mounted a pair on my sr325is and I enjoy them a lot in this configuration (both sonically and nit the least for the comfort).

Today I've got the idea to try them on my DBV3 modded t50rp and boy am I glad I did. This has to be the single biggest positive change I've done to them since dampening the cups and added cotton when I first got them.

It's like a vail has been lifted of them and treble extension and also clarity is better than with the 840 pads. They also feel more "airy" if that makes sense. This without giving up any of the great bass and mids they have.Overall sound is a bit brighter than before but not overly so in any way. Only drawback is that they now leak a lot more sound but for me that's a ting I can easily live with. I feel as if I've gotten a new pair of cans :gs1000smile:

Normally velour pads decreases the bass by quite a bit but I haven't noticed this with these ones on any of the cans I've tried them with. It has to be something with that memory foam that work wonders. The pads are only $22 shipped from mp4nation if anyone else would like to try. Needless to say I ordered yet another pair today :wink_face:

I'm a noob on modding compared to a lot of you other guys here but I still wanted to share my findings.

Excellent tip, Peter123! Thanks. I'm ordering some HM5 velour pads.

Wow how much did you have to stretch them to get them to fit? The opening in the back in not that big.

I had a quick try when I first got them but didn't want to risk ripping the back.

The pleather covers the bottom of the padding so unlike other velours the sound is not going through the bottom of the pad and the density of the foam has a lot to do with it.

They make the DT880's very boomy so it's a no go with them.

I don't remember at the moment. Are HM5 pads the same as FA-003 pads?

I have FA-003 pleathers but not velours.

micmacmo posted his FA-003 "Inner Tube" pad mod in FIMM, I believe. Or in Wow...T50RP mod thread. Very slick.

Yes they are same, but now they are available as velours since few months.

A lot :D

It took about 5 minutes to mount each pad.

Hi guys !

Do you know why Mr Speaker replace the white gauze (glued on the rubber frame) by a 2mm piece of felt (of the same size) ? What's the impact on the sound ?

Thank you by advance for the answer !

Thanks for the info BMF, yes that is a slick repair for sure!

Here is the link for others who tear a pad back...

anyone compared the regular HM5's to the thicker memory foam pleather version? worth the $23? I hoarded a bunch of HM5's, dammit.

@leeperry
I'm a bit disappointed with the little difference between the old and the new pleather pads. I love the old ones and the new ones are not a big upgrade.

The new velours however we're another story wink.gif

Here is the thickness difference.

The regular pad has a much softer pleather than the new pad does.

Thanks for the pic! I must admit that the pleather used on the regular one is really über-comfy and durable, not like the usual SONY CD900ST/CD3K/SA5K/XB700 junk that always ends up flaking a few months later.

Is the memory foam stiff? Does it improve isolation from the outside noise?

I've got another custom pair of cups in the works for someone :D

This time they're going to have 3 bass ports which you can close and open based on your needs.

@TrollDragon
Wow, that's a lot bigger difference than I noticed in my pairs. Are the regular ones well worn? I compared two new sets, maybe there's something wrong with my pair.......

I hate the Sony plastic Schiit they put on pads you look like your have ear leprosy after it starts to flake and peel...

I have the thick pads on my Ultrasones at the moment which did have regular HM5 pads. I can't really say if isolation is any better or not but the foam is quite a bit stiffer and keeps the driver's a little further from your ears.
