please help me protect my equiptment!

Thread Starter
so it's suddenly occured to me that i'm incredibly stupid and am running a high risk of damaging my system since it's plugged directly into the wall.

i've got a b-p-t bp-jr (that i might sell to dave), but that doesn't have any surge protection.

i'm looking for something that will make sure my gear doesn't break and also doesn't hurt the sound AT ALL. i've heard that surge protectors limit dynamics. i guess i could try to hunt one down in my house and check it out it's effects on the sound, but messing w/ my powercords is a pain and i'd rather just solve the problem correctly and immediately.

does anybody have any suggestions on something that will protect my gear w/o harming the sound at all?

also, concidering that all my gear might be plugged into a b-p-t, i may only need something with one outlet

anybody know of an "audiophile" one outlet surge protector?

Just get a good surge protector.

It wont affect the sound what so ever.

The brickwall can be had for about $200. Some say the brickwall limits dynamics, while some say they can not hear any difference. As with all things, it depends whether YOU can hear any changes in the sound with or without it.

I don't recall ever hearing any sonic degradation when plugging my equipments to a surge protector.

I've used Panamax surge protectors. They seem well made (at least a step above your generic Radioshack stuff) and work well. They have many models and should be able to fit your budget no matter how large or small it is.

I have had no power protection degrade my sound. Or my hearing is not that good.

But what kind of sonic degradation is there when your amp blows due to line problems?

I use a Brickwall and also a Tripplite AC Regulator (with surge protection also). I am happy with that. My system sounds fine.

I'm using both the Panamax and Acoustic Research surge protectors, both claim to have some form of line conditioning, I don't remember hearing any difference when I installed them although I wasn't listening that carefully, I'm sure it makes some minescule difference but whatever I think the Panamax is of a higher quality, the sockets grab onto the plugs very tightly and the unit is heavy and has a large cord. Also check on the Monster Cable PC1000 which was just recently reduced to $60 almost everywhere.

Yeah Im using Panamax too.

I've heard none. Nobody I know hears any difference.

It gets buffered anyways.

I got a Monster powercenter HTS2000 MKII.
I can't speak about sonic degradation because this was an upgrade from an RCA brand surge protector.

My stuff does sound better than it did.

Pretty much anything in the Monster Power line will do fine. Monster power is guaranteed to not limit current or dynamics in any way. However, the the backdrop will not be as "black" as some multi-thousand dollar conditioners out there on the Market. My Monster Power HTS-5100 SS doesn't add anything to the sound, and it takes away the crackles that I get when I turn on appliances. Good value IMO... My version has $500,000 insurance against damage given that you use a grounded outlet.

Btw, I paid $500 for my HTS-5100 SS

Try looking into one of the new Shunyata Hydra -2 or -4s. The reviews by Marc Mickelson over at SoundStage! are simply incredible. (His review is of the -8) I'm not 100% sure they're out yet, but if so this would definitely be something worth checking out.

It is the exact same electronics as the -8 model, but the -2 would only have two outlets and cost WAY less than the $1995 Hydra-8.

How about the B-P-T CPC? It costs about $300 and is essentially a surge protector and power filter without the ultra isoaltion circuitry. If you're really adventurous, you might want to consider the BP-1 (or the 3.5, for that matter) Ultra series of isolators as well. For really intense filtration surge protection add on a PS-audio ultimate outlet.

Hey!
Wait a minute, I misread your post. I didn't realise that you already HAD a B-P-T Jr. Why don't you send it back for an upgrade to add a surge protector. It'll probably be much cheaper than any of the other decent alternatives mentioned here.
