DAC in question vs STX

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00007JO2V/ref=oh_details_o04_s00_i00

so i have some $60 DAC i used for my PS3 in the past to get headphone out before i got my HD650. i've used the STX as a DAC for my schiit asgard + HD650 and out of curosity wanted to see how it fared against the STX DAC. and... i actually like the sound from my $60 DAC better than my STX. it just my ears or is the STX that bad as a DAC? i find the music more lively with the $60 DAC.

How was the C2G hooked up compered to the STX (coaxial, optical, USC)?

Weird.

What settings are you using in Xonar Control Panel?

Have you tried the third party drivers "Unified Xonar Drivers" at Brainbit?

What program are you using to pay audio?

Try setting the PCM to 96Khz.

How many "Audio channels'?

I would assume to just leave it at 2 channels.

Otherwise the only thing I can think of to try is installing he brainbit "Unified Xonar Drivers".

Can't think of anything else to try.

1. Your preference does not mean the DAC is better, it could be worse but you prefer it. The STX cards are very technically good and while specs for the DAC are not to be found it is unlikely, given what it is, to be better engineered than the STX. Of course this does not mean it cannot be good or even better but I would consider that (the better subclause)  unlikely as the STX cards have been heavily tested in a number of tech sites and always do well.

2. How did you level match for your comparisons. Even a 0.3db difference in volume levels may be perceived as superior, hifi salesman routinely used to pump up the volume to make sure you buy the more expensive amp with higher commission.

^^ that,

Just because it sounds better (I'm talking about personal preference here) does not mean it is. I am willing to bet if your listening to details the STX has more. But I am not a fan of the stock opamps. THS4032 are a much better choice for the I/V section, and no idea what you wanna do in the buffer section.

The C2G dac just has a different Sound signature, which you prefer, its not "better"
