Most under-rated headphones... - Page 3

Honestly, the Pioneer SE-A1000 is way too unnoticed and hence underrated around here.  Clean (albeit somewhat anemic) lows, clear airy highs, ever-so-slightly warm but decently forward mids, easily driven without amplification, and ridiculously light and comfortable (though it won't fit right on small heads without a bit of modding).  MSRP of $145, street price of $60, Head-Fi classifieds price of $45 used.  What's not to love?

Isn't that the new, current-model Pioneer? That comes with like a 30ft cord?

Anyways, on the list it goes. Also added price categories - I was going to do 0-150 as kiteki suggested, but it ended up with most of them on the same list. redface.gif

not really sure if px100-ii is underrated. maybe only in this forum haha... in some forums it is almost always recommended along with portapro and aiaiai tracks.

D1001K? Even though i've seen recommendations for those, I don't feel like they've been recommended enough

Haven't they been out of production for a few years? (I'm just trying to clarify). AFAIK they were replaced by the D1100 (which are different) and re-incarnated as the CAL!

The CAL! is also the Fostex Kotori in Japan, which is the most customizeable headphone ever, it should come in up to ~1000 colour options.

Apparently the D10001, CAL! and Fostex Kotori sound slightly different, though.

There is also another celebrity headphone with the same driver.

I haven't head any of them so idk ...

p.s. It's not really bio-cellulose it's bio-cellulose on paper or microfibre or something, since pure thin bio-cel is very delicate.

Yup, that's the one.  20ft of 4mm-thick nylon-braided cord into a rather nice spring-shrouded aluminum plug.  Even though they give you a nice and sturdy velcro strap to keep it all in check, it can still take up quite a bit of room in your pocket.  smile.gif  Still, its a great diamond in the rough - particularly for acoustic stuff - and I'd recommend that people at least get in a listen if they can.  I'll be bringing mine to the LA meet next month if anyone wants to hear it.

i would say the BOSE AE2i...as a lightweight compact bring-along can.

i say underrated, (maybe overpriced...but I got mine for usd100 :P...at that price point its a good option.)

actually prefers it to the KNK KNS8400 when i had them back to back.

they both sounded v similar, with the Bose having the better balance.

sound presentation is light n quick..fluttering bass without the weightyslamm.

v enjoyable can to slug along.

isolation on the CALi isnt great, otherwise i would have snagged one tobehonest.

the sound is warm and engaging..not great for libraries n buses..

the Bose isolation is muchmuch better.

Just wanted to say, I am loving this thread.

I had no idea those Pioneer SE's even existed.

And now, I'm considering the AKG K601's, even though I JUST bought the Q701's. Oh well...

Anyway, Numark Red Wave. I find those to be a little "underground", if you would. It does not take much to stumble across them, but not everyone knows about them. They are not the clearest sounding cans in the world, but they make up for it in loud, booming bass, that is not as overwhelming as say, the XB500's. That's just my opinion though.

People that like Q701 will also enjoy the Beyer T70p but I'm not sure on the price difference, not saying the T70p is underrated just a bit overlooked.

Yeah, Pioneer's don't see a lot of action around here.  Its kind of sad because - as of late - they've been making some pretty decent cans.  I have quite a few myself and they've definitely suprised the heck out of me.  I loves me some obscure cans!

OT:  How do you like the Q701?  Later in the year, I'm looking forward to picking up a Q701, a K550, and MAYBE an SPL Auditor if I wanna be really good to myself.  Pretty much does it for my wallet this year . . . aside from some of the crazy stuff that pops up in The Deals Thread on occasion.

Obobs, is the list done by MSRP or street price?  Just ask because the SE-A1000's street price has been at around $60 for a while now . . . which is like a BIG difference from $145.  smile.gif

So after seeing the "most over-rated headphone" thread, and the "whats the worst headphone you ever heard" thread, and similar threads in that vein, I had an idea: what about a thread that encourages people to list headphones they feel are under-rated/unknown/real dark horses that members may not be as aware of (okay so for example, how many people don't know about the HD 800? But how many DO know about the HD 565?).

Totally had the same idea as I started reading that (overrated) thread today. Awesome. Well here we go:

K181DJ

ATH-SJ5

ATH-ES10

KNS-8400

RP-HJE900 (IEM)

AH-D1000/D1001
