What headphones? Need an amp?

Hello, this is my first post here but I have read quite a few articles. The site has been very informative so far. But I have some questions.

 

I've been passionate about audio since my teens (I am now 34). I went through the big car stereo phase when I was younger and have slowly migrated toward quality over quantity of sound. However, I do still enjoy playing video games on the rare occasion that I have time. That being said I am currently looking for a headset that I can use for crystal clear audio on my computer and also an addon mic for gaming. The set will be used on my PC mainly but also on PS3 and possibly 360.

 

1. What is a good set of cans in the $200 and under range? I can currently get a set of Sennheiser HD 598 for $200 shipped from an authorized dealer. Should I jump on those or is there something better?

 

2. Would I need an amp or sound card for my computer? I have a GIGABYTE GA-Z77X-UD3H motherboard with VIA VT2021 (7.1+2 Channel, Output: 24-Bit, 192KHz, 110dB) Most sound cards I've seen seem to have the same or lower specs. 

 

3. What would be a good amp for PS3/360? I was thinking FIOO E17? I want something with TOSLINK input

Heya,

 

I would stress figuring out what kind of sound you want to hear. For example, do you want neutral, or are you looking for something with some more emphasized bass? Also, you can easily not bother with specific amps and stuff if you simply have an AV receiver sitting around. You can get inexpensive ones that are just as good for this too. A used old one for example will work great. Then you can input from anything and everything and output to your headphones.

Oh wow I never thought of using my receiver! Geez, good thing I asked. Yea, I have a Pioneer... 1022 I think. You just saved me some cash and now I feel stupid lol.

Ok so what about a sou d card for my comp? Or is that on board OK?

As far as the sound, I just want something clear and detailed. Like I said I'm past my bass head high school days. I did like the sound of the Bose, I thin QC15 but they were over $300

Heya,

 

Output optical from onboard to receiver. No need for a sound card. The AV receiver is your DAC.

 

As for headphone, I would put you on the AKG Q701, Beyer DT880 and Hifiman HE-300.
