There have been some great songs listed here...

I guess my own sad song would have to be Sounds of Silence by Simon & Garfunkel

Another choice I would submit is Harvest any of the tracks...by Neil Young

And as already mentioned River by Joni Mitchell

Don't know if it's been mentioned already but 4+20 on Croby, Stills, Nash & Young on "Deja Vu" is pretty gloomy. Great guitar pickin work too.

-Sarah McLachlan's "Hold On". About a friend's husband who died of cancer. 

 

Most tear jerking line: "This one is going to hurt like hell".  Not only the line, but Sarah's way of singing it. Gets me every time.

 

Not a place I want to be.

 

-A song that brings tears to my eyes, but has a happy ending...Don Henley's "Last Worthless Evening".

 

Even though I exhibit a manly exterior, I'm a sap.

I always found the violin to be the saddest of the classical instruments.

It may be modern but the Schindlers List song, played by Perlman gets to me.

Sarah Changs Vitali Chaconne, is also pretty emotional.

Watch six feet under and then listen to  Breathe Me - by Sia

Pretty much all the songs off Viva Emptiness and Last Fair Deal Gone Down by Katatonia are pretty sad.
