What is the Saddest song ever written? - Page 36

I donno...

There have been some great songs listed here...

I guess my own sad song would have to be Sounds of Silence by Simon & Garfunkel

Another choice I would submit is Harvest any of the tracks...by Neil Young

And as already mentioned River by Joni Mitchell

Good to know I pulled in at least one victim.

Don't know if it's been mentioned already but 4+20 on Croby, Stills, Nash & Young on "Deja Vu" is pretty gloomy. Great guitar pickin work too.

FOUR AND TWENTY YEARS AGO I COME INTO THIS LIFE
THE SON OF A WOMAN AND A MAN WHO LIVED IN STRIFE
HE WAS TIRED OF BEIN' POOR
AND HE WASN'T INTO SELLIN' DOOR TO DOOR
AND HE WORKED LIKE THE DEVIL TO BE MORE

A DIFFERENT KIND OF POVERTY NOW UPSETS ME SO
NIGHT AFTER SLEEPLESS NIGHT I WALK THE FLOOR AND WANT TO KNOW
WHY AM I SO ALONE?
WHERE IS MY WOMAN?
CAN I BRING HER HOME?
HAVE I DRIVEN HER AWAY?
IS SHE GONE?

MORNIN' COMES THE SUNRISE AND I'M DRIVEN TO MY BED
I SEE THAT IT IS EMPTY AND THERE'S DEVILS IN MY HEAD
I, EMBRACE THE MANY COLORED BEAST
I GROW WEARY OF THE TORMENT, CAN THERE BE NO PEACE?
AND I FIND MYSELF JUST WISHIN' THAT MY LIFE WOULD SIMPLY CEASE

That's a great song! lyrics are kind of dumb, but good tune.

Damn near anything by The Smiths

How about "Asleep"
Maybe not the saddest ever but simple and depressing.

Sing me to sleep
Sing me to sleep
I'm tired and I
I want to go to bed
Sing me to sleep
Sing me to sleep
And then leave me alone
Don't try to wake me in the morning
'Cause I will be gone
Don't feel bad for me
I want you to know
Deep in the cell of my heart
I will feel so glad to go
Sing me to sleep
Sing me to sleep
I don't want to wake up
On my own anymore
Sing to me
Sing to me
I don't want to wake up
On my own anymore
Don't feel bad for me
I want you to know
Deep in the cell of my heart
I really want to go
There is another world
There is a better world
Well, there must be
Well, there must be
Bye bye

Don't take the girl - Tim McGraw

-Sarah McLachlan's "Hold On". About a friend's husband who died of cancer.

Most tear jerking line: "This one is going to hurt like hell".  Not only the line, but Sarah's way of singing it. Gets me every time.

Not a place I want to be.

-A song that brings tears to my eyes, but has a happy ending...Don Henley's "Last Worthless Evening".

Even though I exhibit a manly exterior, I'm a sap.

Etude Op.10 No.3 (Tristesse) - Frédéric Chopin

I always found the violin to be the saddest of the classical instruments.

It may be modern but the Schindlers List song, played by Perlman gets to me.

Sarah Changs Vitali Chaconne, is also pretty emotional.

Justin Vernon - A song for a lover of long ago

Sounds as if he is losing it towards the end. Epic song.

Last Kiss is pretty sad, Pearl Jam's version seems to fit the song best.

Watch six feet under and then listen to  Breathe Me - by Sia

Pretty much all the songs off Viva Emptiness and Last Fair Deal Gone Down by Katatonia are pretty sad.

Quoted for truth...

Maybe even "Self Conclusion" - The Spill Canvas

Yeah, just about anything by them.

A few of my favorites

"Grace is Gone" - Dave Matthews Band

"Thief" - Our Lady Peace (really strong story behind the song)

"Hold On" (previously mentioned)

"My Foolish Heart" Bill Evans

I'll try to write some others down as I run into them.
