Been thinking about this for a while, what is the saddest song ever written?

I know there is no definitive answer to this but only your person opinion. But post away.

Mine - Everybody Hurts - REM

Cat's in the Cradle by Harry Chapin

That song's just depressing. Not that it's particularly applicable to my own life, but I know plenty of people where that's the story of their life.

There is a song that is not sad like Cats in the Cradle but it does choke me up every time I hear it at weddings. That song is Bob Carlisle's Butterfly Kisses.

I have to leave the room when a father dances with the bride to this song. My masculine side doesn't want anyone to notice that an incident such as that turns my eyes faucets to the "on" position.

One of the saddest I can think of is a choral arrangement called "Al Mar Anochecido", but pretty sure hardly anyone in this forum has heard of it. Among better known songs, these are songs that I find extremely sad, still I really like them a lot:

Xandinha (Cesaria Evora)
Scientist (Coldplay)
In a little while (U2)
Pearls (Sade)
Jezebel (Sade)
Ice (Sarah MacLachlan)
Romeo and Juliet (Dire Straits)

I'd have to think about this at length for a real answer, but the saddest song I've heard today, at least, is "Dead Flowers," Townes Van Zandt's cover.

Off the top of my head, I'd go with "Empty Chairs at Empty Tables" from Les Miserables.

richard strauss - vier letzte lieder (four last songs)

Ben Folds Five - Brick.

Personal thing I guess, this is the only song still capable of putting me in tears at times.

Ben Harper - " Another lonely day " , but it is so lovely .

Among top 5 on my list .
