AKG K 701 vs K 550, which one should I choose?

Hey guys, I'm a little new here other than the lurking I've done up till now and I wanted to get the best advise about my biggest headphone purchase to date.

I've looked at most high-end headphone models and narrowed it down between two models of AKG,

K 701 and K 550

Looking at both of them, they seem quite alike but I'd like to know what you guys would recommend between the two.

I want something with great sound (both seem to cover that) and can be somewhat portable (mainly for home use but will take around town with me at times).

I'm etching closer to the 550s but the 701s are looking mighty fine as well...

anyway, thanks to the help.

Now, I own a pair of Q701's, but for you, I'd have to agree with Sonic Boom here. The K550's are quite a bit more portable than the Q701's. The Q's are monstrous (and the 550's sorta are too), and they don't swivel flat like the K550's do. They are both excellent sounding headphones. The K550's have more bass and they have better sound isolation, so that's something to consider as well. However, the Q701's are more comfortable IMO. Hope this helps. Good luck.

See if you can try a pair of K550s. They sound great, but only with a good seal. I could not get them to seal to my head no matter which setting I head the headband on. They just didn't clamp enough. However, when I pushed them on my head with my hands, they sounded good.

Have not had any fit problems with my Q701s. Like they said, though, the Qs are not very portable at all.

During recent NYC meet i heard K550 with my Cowon A3 player (also interested i portable use) and Burson 160D and they were lacking most noticeable on classical or jazz. Also tried Mr Speakers Mad Dog with the Cowon and they had better bass than K550

Thanks everyone for you're input! Now I can clearly see which one I'm going to have to go for in terms of how they will be used, the K 550s sound to be the best option for me because I'll be using them on the go a lot over the next few years since I'm about to go into college life and such.

I'll be sure to grab some K 701s whenever I get another chance but for now the K 550s are going to be the best in terms of my life style.

Thanks again,
