Bose mediamate..how good are they?

Has anyone listened to or own the Bose mediamate speakers?

I was leaning towards them with their cost of just 100$. I heard various rave reviews saying they sound excellent.

The problem is that most speakers here are damn expensive, and the one that i was considering buying was the altec lansing 621 but they cost 169$ with the currency coversion.
They also cannot be bought in here from US since they are too heavy to get them in here, but since the bose speakers are so light, i can get someone to bring it here. Are they worth buying for 100$?

thanks.

I think that (in my opinion) that the Altec lansing ATP3 are a much better speaker, as are any of the other higher end options. But look into the ATP3.

For the money, and without a sub, I think they're the best computer speakers I've heard. If you don't want a sub, and wanna pay $100 maximum, I think this is a decent route to go.

I'm not bose fanboy either My advice is impartial.

If you can pick up an old vintage integrated or receiver, your horizons will broaden with a variety of bookshelves available for around this price.

I've owned the Bose Mediamates for about a year now, and they do what I need: let me listen to music enjoyably without my headphones. I got them for $70.00 new (found the deal at pricegrabber.com). Compared to the quality of sound I was getting from a set of upper end Koss computer speakers (which cost me $50.00 back in 1998), the Bose are well worth the extra $20.00 (and would have been well worth the extra $50.00). The bass is full, the highs are clear and well-placed. The mids are a little recessed, but not to the point where it interferes with my enjoying the music. I just notice it compared to normally hearing the music through my headphones (Grado SR225's) where the mids are forward. The Mediamates sound nowhere near as good as my Boston Acoustic full-size speakers on my component stereo system. They also took about a month of burn-in to sound how I am used to their sounding now. During their burn-in period, they exaggerated bass and treble, with the midrange sounding washed out. I think their emphasis on bass and treble is Bose's attempt to satisfy gamers as well as music listeners. But, in not too much time, the spectral balance became quite enjoyable.

A few more reasons why I like the Mediamates: they have two sets of inputs (RCA), with a selector, and a mini headphone jack. So, I can put my computer sound card AND my CDP into the Mediamates, and then run my Mediamates into my PPA. It's easy to switch sources. When I want to listen through the speakers, I just unplug the mini plug from the Mediamate headphone jack and the sound comes from the speaker. The A/B selector and the headphone jack are on the front of the Mediamate where they are easy to get at. The Mediamate also served as a sort of pre-amp when my CDP was a weak output PCDP. So, for me, the Mediamates really fit well into my overall rig, in addition to sounding good enough to fulfill their primary function.

I don't have the MediaMates but have a pr of over 15 yrs old Bose Room mates. Their first powered portable speakers.
It is still working and is really good for connecting to a PCDP.
The enclosure is made of some dense mineral loaded material and it's kinda heavy.
Too bad I can't seem to find more of them around.l

Why not look into Boston Acoustic BA-735USB or 745 ,or Monsoon Flat Panel MM series? They could be have for your budget and I believe is much better value. klipsh Speaker is another alternative.
