I have a friend who uses $3(nzd, $2.36usd) ear buds... probably should surprise him for his birthday by 'splashing out' on some $40 brainwavz.

Yeah, I think so.  It certainly looks outrageous enough that someone going for that kind of thing would want one.

Oh I know you that weren't criticising the OP.   Just pointing out that no matter what anyone says to console him, he's probably going to feel a little stung about this as he had a chance to help someone he cared about.

Wow, I cannot even fathom the noise that is supposed to pass for sound in a $3 pair of buds.  Seriously, you're gonna get him some Brainwavz?  Can I be your friend too?

What makes it even better is that he got them and they broke, he managed to convince the retailer to replace them under warranty 

I have considered getting him some alphas/betas for a while, but part of me thinks he won't notice the difference and may just respond with "but I already have a pair of earbuds" and pointing out the price isn't really a good idea with a gift.

Lol, guess it wasn't even worth it to the merchant to risk bad feedback for a matter of pennies (or is it pence?).

Well you could always rationalize it to him as such:  "***** buds require you to turn it louder to get better detail from your music - which in turn ruins your hearing mate.  And if I'm to be honest, I wouldn't be a friend if I let that happen."  Of course having said that, even something relatively economical would suffice.

+1  Now there's a pair he'll be happy with - both inside and out.  Does he still have his Beats?  I bet that an A/B session between the two would be fairly revealing.

Make sure it's as blind as can be, don't want a bias 'losing' this A/B for us... :D
