post #3 of 276/20/12 at 7:50pmWell, figure out what kind of music your friend listens to. If he likes more metal, dubstep, electronic, hip hop, I will suggest the Numark Red Waves. They are more bass heavy, but they are very versatile, and portable, they fold up to a little more than the size of a softball. And if you check out Amazon, they are on sale for 70 bucks (they retail for 200, Numark had them listed at 100 until about a month ago) so, IMO, they are a steal. However, if he likes more alternative, classical, jazz, blues or instrumental, I'd suggest the Audio Technica AD700. they are 100 bucks in their Amazon store. They are great for watching movies, as the soundstage on these headphones is so phenomenally huge. Seriously, you can hear just about anything with them. I hope this helps you and good luck!

While the overall profile is going to be more balanced and clearer than his Beats (I'm assuming he had Studios or below and not Pros), the LF response is decidedly weaker. Plus, it's rounded and boomy. I'm not saying Beats have tight and punchy bass, but these definitely don't. The mids are better, though still somewhat recessed. Highs are alright but not anything particularly special. It's not a terrible sounding pair of cans, but it's far enough away from the Beats profile that I'm not sure he'll like it at all.
If there's anyway he can cancel his order, he definitely should and just follow your advice.

Quote:Well of course. But after learning what his last pair of cans were (and knowing something about his new pair of cans), I find it unlikely that he will be happy with said purchase. Pretty sure the only reason OP is upset by this is because he cares about his friend and wants something better (however subjective that may be) for him.
