HD580 Cable Problem

I noticed tonight that my right earphone on my Sennheiser HD580's went out. I wiggled the cable below the connector and it would work again, but it intermittantly cuts out. To give an idea of how sensitive it is, if I lean my head back it goes out, lean forward it comes back on.

I searched around and saw this: http://www5.head-fi.org/forums/showt...ht=hd580+cable - but I don't think that's the problem because shaking the connector doesn't make/break the sound, just a simple touch of the cable does it. Does anyone have any idea how I can fix this? Sorry, I'm not too great with this kind of stuff.

Well, the first thing to do is to see if the problem is with the right driver or the cable. Sounds like the cable is defective, but this will tell us for sure: Remove the cable from the headphone and swap the connectors left for right. That is, put the left connector into the right driver and the right connector into the left driver, then listen to some music. Now, if the problem persists with the right driver, then it's a bad driver. If the problem switches to the left driver, then the cable is defective.

If the cable is defective and your 580s are still under warranty, then you could get a warranty replacement from Sennheiser. However, this is the perfect opportunity to try out an aftermarket cable fom Meier/Oehlbach, Moon Audio, Zu, Bayley Audio, etc. You won't be sorry if you do. (Well, your wallet might be sorry. )

So, anyway, try that and hope that it's the cable that's gone bad.

Thanks for the reply.

I'm sure it's not the driver, because I can make controlled motions with the cable that cause the sound to drop out, it doesn't just happen at random. But I guess I'm gonna have to open it up anyway and check the connection, and to put in a new cable possibly.

Sennheiser is really good about fixing these. I had the HD-580s, and I wasn't even using a standard cable, and they fixed them for free. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that they were 5 years old and 4 years out of warranty with no registration card or proof of purchase....and they payed shipping back to me via priority mail....top notch service...

It was surprisingly easy to open it up and check if it was the cable, and I found that to be the case, I'll just go ahead and order a replacement.

Like Stuart, I've had an excellent experience with Sennheiser's service department. Absolutely top-notch, as he said.

So, SVisions, give them a call and get a warranty replacement on your cable. It'll come in handy when you get an aftermarket cable such as an Oehlbach, then decide to upgrade to HD 600s or 650s (you know you will! ). You can then bundle the stock cable with the 580s when you sell them.

I just missed my 6 month warranty on the cables...

Like I said, mine was 4 years 6 months out of warranty, and they fixed it for free and sent it back to me express for free....this was the connectors inside the phone though, not the cable itself...
