The AKG K550 Appreciation/Discussion Thread! - Page 29

I spent less then $2 at the craft store the other night on some felt and tacky glue. Modified both the K550 and K701. It didn't change the character of the K550 too much but it added low end texture to the K701 that it previously lacked. I got my K701 used sans pads. Therefore I don't know if the K701 came with foam inserts for between the headphone and the pads. I'm not a bass head, I prefer bass that is accurate the recording and the felt inserts I made for my K701 have made these cans quite listenable for me with hiphop and EDM.

I still prefer the K550 on vinyl as I don't personally think the K550 is as source dependent as the K701 and my vinyl end could use some work for sure.

Thanks for all of the ideas K550 Appreciation thread!

Did u add to the thickness of the back end of the earpads?
I find tat it fix the position onto my ears better...n even angled the driver a little.
Your extra felt should do the trick.

I experimented with the thicker part of the pads in the front and the back and while I thought it 'felt' right with the thickness in the front it sounds better with the thickness in the back.

BTW, preserve your K701 earpads people. $35 a piece or $70 for both D:

That being said I'm probably going to pay the same price soon enough for the K701 Annie memory foam pads and try them on my K701s...

errr...the thicker part is supposed to be at the back of the ear wink.gif

Yeah, K550 pads would work :P

Would Audeze pads work? They're actually made out of REAL LEATHER.

Has anyone tried the Beyer headband pad on the K550?

I feel like I need something like this cause the handband is very hard on the head, no padding at all.

i had that band over my hd600 before...should work.

The one with the buttons or the other one? What is the difference?

The Sennheiser HD600 pad also works really well and is very comfortable (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/886679-REG/Sennheiser_549375_HD_580_Headband.html). I have a post on how to put in on the 550 (post 418). Its a bit more work but I really like it

Do you know if the Lawton pads would be a better fit than the LCD-s?

I have received a gift from audeze 2 months ago for expressing my feelings about lcd2 on their support page after i had a little argument with them . The gift contained a pair of lcd2 ear-pads.

I was curios to see if they fit the k550, and they did. They are exactly the same diameter. They fit perfectly and with the same mechanism as k550.

They are perfectly isolated now, and actually i think the sound improved a little but i am not sure. the pads may get the driver to far from the ear, must do a little testing, though i enjoy the sound with this mod quite a lot too.

The comfort has also increased a lot! (before this i applied the mod explained in post no 1).

700

Edit:.

After a little testing, i came to the conclusion that the audeze pads take the driver too far away from the ear. It doesn't sound bad, it is a little more laid back, but so are the bass and details. Maybe someone with a bigger head than mine would like this mod.

I think this could be resolved by making the bigger part of the earpad smaller by taking off the leather and bind them with thread in 2-3 places.
