Should I buy Mad Dogs too and return the pair that I least like?  I'm from UK so assume it would be a struggle to return Mad Dogs to USA plus I'd have import tax to pay that I'd lose out on!

I live in the UK and both Richer Sounds and Superfi would let you have a demo of the K550s. I got mine from Superfi.

Mad dogs take a lot to be driven well. They still share a driver with the T50RP! IMO, you need something like a Schiit Valhalla to drive them to their potential. K550s sound great out of a standard Astell and Kern K100, or just out of my Fiio E17.

However, I had a awful experience with their build quality... to call it "crappy" is almost a compliment. Well, I got the first pair from amazon, it looked awesome and everything, but after less than a week I noticed some scratches on the silver rings surrounding the drivers and the fake leather on the right pad had already a huge cut... it was on the inside, quite difficult to notice, so I thought it was a defect (I had barely the time to use it for a couple of listening sessions) and I sent them back to amazon. After a week I got a replacement... everything was fine until today in the morning, when I found out that a driver had stopped working, no sound from it. And yet, I had never dropped them or anything, and they had already got several scratches on the plastic and metal encasing together with the faulty driver...

now, I have asked for a refund... it's quite unlikely that I got two faulty units out of two, so I am afraid to have to deal again with the same problem after receiving a replacement for the third time, and that's quite unfortunate since, for the time I owned them, I really enjoyed their sound signature (my wife loved them as well ^^ ). However, build quality is as much important as sound quality, since I wanted to use them as portable headphone... and to carry around such a fragile gear! I'd say nope...

Anyway, I am curious to know if someone else has experienced similar problems... are they so prone to breaking? and so easily? does the plastic and the metal elements scratch so often??

A disappointed ex-owner of the Akg k550...

I wouldn't say that I am disappointed with the K550s but I have had quite a few issues with them. None of this happend within a week though! Over time by the first few weeks I started using the K550s as portable headphones, the metal ring round the ear cup started to get a few scratches from when I had them folded flat and carrying them around in a bag. They must have just been bashing together a bit. I then got a piece of foam and put it between them and that has stopped it from getting any worse.

They fit very well when put in a small laptop bag and it really helps that they fold flat.

I too had a faulty driver but all it did was distort on bass heavy music. I took the K550s back to the store I got them from and they got sent back to AKG and got mended and they got sent back to me very quickly. This was quite a while ago. I then started to get quite a lot more scratches but they don't really bother me. What did is that one of the ear pads split open so I ended up buying a new pair and then they were fine again. I think that the build quality feels very good but you really to need to take extreme care of them if you want them to stay scratch free. My other pair of headphones feel much less expensive but they aren't scratched at all really even though I haven't tried to look after them as well. Whatever the ear pads are made of also seems to be quite delicate. It feels as if anything ever so slightly sharp will slice them open.

The K550s to me don't feel to me like they will ever fall apart though. They are very sturdy and well built if I don't include the ear pads. I think it is unlikely that a technical problem like that driver issue I had will happen again though. I just think that over more time, the scratches will get worse. Overall, I think they are quite good as full size portable headphones.

Oh really? they don't have them on Amazon.it (I am from Italy unluckily), but they have the soundmagic hp100...how do they compare?

I wouldn't be able to speak to the HP100 at all as I haven't heard it. It is my understanding that the HP100 and 150 are very similar, but the 150 uses slightly higher quality components. The 150 is an updated version, basically. I think you'll enjoy either of them.
