I got my current pair from them.  I'm asking mainly about the earpads, because I have concerns with regard to longevity.

Sorry, I should have read the previous handful of posts more carefully, didn't realize Marximus was just asking about replacement earpads. Given that these headphones are not one of the AKG "professional" models, I'm not surprised that AKG doesn't sell replacement earpads (disappointed, yes, but not surprised).

I just looked on eBay, and seller wang_yifei sells replacement K550/551 earpads for $35. Not sure about the quality of these, they are not OEM.

I think you may have to go on to this page and ring up and ask.

They may ship to the states but the shipping costs will be much more.

Weird that AKG's pads would be so hard to find, they don't even have a canadian distributor in their contacts!

So I've repatriated my 550s from work to home, and so they've went from being powered from an Aune T1 to a Schiit modi & magni.  Has anyone ever compared the two?  Without doing a direct A/B, after just 1-2 songs, seems a bit to me like the Schiit stack sounds a tad better than the T1.  Nothing really pops up specifically, just a vague impression, which might well be wrong or placebo...

But I'm curious to know if the Schiit should do better?  I remember someone in this thread mentioning that the T1 might not be perfectly suited for the 550s due to impedance, but I'm having bit of trouble to see why:  550s are 32 ohms, where can I see in the specs where the T1/Schiit would be better matched? (and is the Magni indeed better matched?)

[edit] If something, I'd say maybe the Schiit sounds a bit more dynamic.. (better transients, & very slightly better definition)

Hey everyone !

I'm looking to buy the akg k550. The thing is i don't like the fact than the cable cannot be replace. I've seen some mod. Does anyone can detail a bit more how he did the mod (needed items, some pict ...).

As a confirmation, i would like to use it as a nomade headphone. Does some of you are using it this way ? (with my fiio x3)

Thanks :)

Thanks for the tip.  They look really good for not being OEM.  I might buy a pair.  Here's the link for those of you who are interested:

EDIT:  I've ordered them.  The shipping time is substantial, though.  I'll update when I've received them.

I received my new ear pads a few days ago. They feel the same as my others really other that they look new. I have taken my old ones apart and they look very strange inside.

They have this very soft blue foam which could well get reused as that wasn't my problem. That still is as it was new I think.

This was the problem with my right ear pad. The stitching was coming undone which wasn't a huge problem. It just looked silly. I didn't want to risk doing anything about it without having the new ear pads first. I have tried using these pads on my Audio Technica ATH-AD700s and they improve the bass a huge amount but mess up the treble a lot too. I am wondering if leather type materiel is good for bass but not so god for treble. I may try and mend these pads sometime so I can just keep them as spares for when my new pair ware out.

People say you get a better seal with leather vs vegan pads etc.
