In the UK Richersounds sells them brand new for £99, I don't suppose you have some friends or family in the UK that could send them to you. Postage would probably be about £25 though as the box is quite large.

Have you tried looking on ebay? I got mine for about $250 (USD) from an authorized dealer a little bit over a year ago when the street price was around 300+ :)

Yeah, I checked ebay. With import tx, $ conversion, and shipping, it comes close to 300cad.. Im presently torned between the akg k550 and the shure 940. Ncix has the shure at 240 atm, but akg 550 seems more confortable. Passive noise isolation and confort are 2 important factors. Im not too picky on sound signature.

Is that GBP? If so, its still a bit over 300cad..

I will wait a bit then, looking for a promo or an head-fier convincing me to get the shure 940

I worked it out at about 225 CAD but hadn't factored in import duties. I don't know how strict Canadian customs are but if it was sent from a friend or family member as a gift with a low value you should be able to avoid duties. Do they not crop up on Canadian ebay? They regularly sell for around £80 used in the UK. Anyway good luck finding a pair they're really nice headphones.

My bad :*); it is 225 cad... Import taxes on ebay looked like 10-15$, so its still a good deal. I dont have relatives in uk; I will start shopping after work tonight in the uk web stores. And check the classified for a used pair.

190$ at ncix shipping included http://www.ncix.com/detail/akg-by-harman-k-550-41-86789-1297.htm shows backorder, but you could give them a call see when they're supposed to receive them.  Shouldn't be too long..  Where I got mine, very good store, weekly specials, and depending where you are probably won't have to pay provincial taxes.

Shopbot.ca missed this one, but saw the shure 940 at 240$ at ncix.com.. Tx a lot, I just put my order through. The price is good, I just need to wait now.

I currently use some seinheiser pc360 at home, but I will probably switch to the k550 to block out house noises, specially the dehumidifier. Cant wait to use them on the go and see how it fares in the subway.

Speaking of NCIX have anyone ever shopped on the US site of NCIX? I know that the main (ca) site is very reliable and reputable but it seems that the US distribution center is fairly new. I recently bought a HD700 for $470 from them (still on the way) and would like to know if anyone have experience with them. More often than not they have great deals on headphones from time to time

I have bought computer parts from ncix US, it was a lot cheaper with the sale+ new customer discount and shipping was fast (I think their warehouse is in California). I liked dealing with them, CS is a little slow to respond but one you get ahold of them they are great. On par with Amazon/Newegg in my book

I got mine on eBay for $130 USD a few months ago.  If you're up for bidding on a used pair you could save a lot of money - it's not uncommon for them to go that cheap.  These are now my go to mobile headphones for long trips and movies.

(Disclaimer:  long stream of consciousness ahead.)

I'm pretty late to the game.  I've considered purchasing these pretty much since they came out, but I had multiple concerns:  about them being a close K 701 (and therefore lacking bass IMO), and the potential wonky fit/seal/resultant lack of bass, size, etc.  I just got them today. I currently have four circumaurals in my stable:  HD 558s, SoundMAGIC HP100s, NVX XPT100s, and these.  I try to keep only two at a time:  one for music almost exclusively (comfort is not quite *as* important; cable doesn't need to be super long), and one for movies/video games (comfort more important than sound quality, almost; long cable).  For some time now I've used the HP100s for music, and the HD 558s for games/movies.  Several days ago I got the XPT100s again (owned previously), just to remember how they sounded.  I think the HP100s are fantastic headphones, don't get me wrong, but for all their richness and clarity, they can be a bit dark/closed sounding/dull.

Note that these characteristics didn't seem to be a huge deal to me...before I got the AKGs today.  After I'm done with this post, I'll be throwing the rest of my misconceptions out the window.  The K 550s are fantastic, and have a gorgeous sound to them (this is straight out of the box, maybe an hour and a half or two hours of playtime).  They're clearer and more open than the HP100s.  They don't lack bass to my ears.  Texture is excellent. They present a great...atmosphere, if that's the right word.  A great presence.  I was expecting closed K 701s.  This is not my impression.  They have a great soundstage, but they are also more forward and energetic than I was expecting.  Impact is superb.  Just a lovely tone from top to bottom.  And they're very aesthetically pleasing.  I haven't had issues with a seal.  I think I've got a biggish noggin (I think I'm set at the 4 on the adjustment scale).

This is my third time owning the HP100s, and I think they may be going to the FS forum again.  I think I'll be returning the XPT100s.  The HD 558s are still great headphones (especially for the price), and they will continue to work well for movies and games.  I think I've found my new main music headphones.  I do have a couple minor issues with them.  The earpads have a bit of a cheap feel to them, and I'm concerned about replacements (although they are very comfortable).  Additionally, the headband is really thinly padded, and I find myself adjusting it fairly frequently.  Other than that, two big thumbs up to AKG.

Nice post. Good impressions that are in line with what I've heard when I first purchased them. As a matter of fact, since climbing the headphone ladder to the LCD-XC I can still go back to the K550 and appreciate their sound quality at their price point. They may not have the speed and articulation of the higher end cans, BUT they also don't colour or distort the sound too much either. Also, the soundstage and black background are fantastic for a closed headphone, and they are fairly neutral.

I really enjoy them from the FiiO X5/e12 stack with bass boost on. That's a great combo to lose yourself in.
