but in his review he says "that the deep bass here is clearly audible". the fibass struggled to reach the lowest bass octaves when i heard it. makes me wonder if he reviewed those tracks after he eq'd it.

Where do you even find music that contains sound at 15Hz?

And this is the problem I have with reviewers that focus and make points with graphs and frequencies.. I just want to scream out at them, just listen to the flipping music and tell us how it makes you feel rather than how you can scientifically quantify it!

That's why I like this thread so much, it's the music that counts here not the science!

As in the guitar? Really? Can you give me the name of a track? I'm curious.

Can I just say that the Piano Forte X weighs a ton and I feel like I could knock someone out with it?

I don't judge phones by measurements but it's cool to have a reference point.

I can't hear down to 15 hz - who can? all i know is that the bass roll-off was noticeable with the fibass to my ears. the ie80 that i tried dug deeper but that's about the only positive thing I can say about that phone.

Did you bother to actually listen to his test track? Of course the deep bass is audible, 'cause the FI-BA-SS can render bass down to 20Hz and there's no mid-upper bass to speak of in this track to mask it.

I can, but "feel" may be a more appropriate term in this case than "hear". (My deficiency's located at the opposite end of the frequency spectrum

Well, here's for some recommended bass testing music then... hope these Grooveshark links aren't blocked for anyone:

Markus Schulz - Mainstage (my favorite test track for deep bass rumble, courtesy of shigzeo)

Cassandra Wilson - Closer to You (stellar recording quality, very deep acoustic bass accompaniment)

Calexico - Sonic Wind (excellent live recording, not really a bassy track, but listen to the walking bass after 1:07!)

didn't feel a need to James. maybe I can hear down to 15hz. I don't really know for sure. but deep bass weakened earlier with the fibass than it did with the ie80 as I heard it.

For Next Saturday: lets see if we can find a good time for the most amount of people possible for the second installment of Piano Forte live commentary plus new music.

We need to name this thing.

RiddleGuy is choosing, and has chosen an album. RG, can you please let us know what the album is? And if there is an edition or recording to look for?

Time to get the ball rolling!

P.S. I'm listening right now to the album of my choosing for when it's my turn, and I can't wait for you guys to hear it. It's another one made for the PF's. And it's in 96/24.

James, those tracks are great. I use Mainstage also. Another track I like to use is
Temple Caves by Mickey Hart.

I can't get a grooveshark link from my mobile but it's there. It's well recorded and in that song there's an instrument I don't know that goes quite low. Maybe a bit higher than in those tracks but it has a unique texture I have not really heard before.

Here's a few more tracks to test low frequencies:

  1. Brian Eno's Juju Space Jazz (off his Nerve Net album)
  2. Radiohead's The Amazing Sounds of Orgy
  3. Peter Gabriel's Barry Williams Show
  4. Brian Eno's Lizard Point (off his On Land album)
  5. Fripp & Eno's Ringing Beat as well as Deep Indian Long (off their Cotswold Gnomes album)
