I just today ordered a balanced interconnect to try and see if there is a difference from the SE input. I would still run SE out. I'll get to balancing something one of these days.

Still can't figure out why raising output impedance via serial resistor alleviates the distortion. Wish I knew output impedance of 71b. Emailed Ray.

Another thing that makes no sense is how etymotics is claiming you can turn the low impedance ER4p into the 100 ohm S model that sounds better, with a serial resistor.

(FYI You can certainly do the opposite: use an adapter to plug a balanced headphones into a single ended out. Many people do exactly this to allow balanced headphones to be used with SE amps.)

If you could recable the FAD IEMs for balanced use, that would be interesting...  :-)

I think the case was people trying to use a single ended source and using an adaptor with RSA output, trying to utilize the balanced inputs, so the 71B ran full balance that was doing the damage, not on the output side..............

As many have been using the adaptors on the output side....with no ill effects for quite a period of time.

Again, I would say the input side is negligible regarding improvements sonically...

But

On the output side, the difference between single ended and balanced is huge, the added dynamics, the opening up of the soundstage and the control in the bass...............

That's exactly what I've heard. But I still need a balanced interconnect to balance a phone anyway, right?

Hmmm, what should I have balanced.... First I have to figure out this resistance thing. Maybe I won't keep the 71B.

Interesting. Ray certainly does not agree with it. What they are doing is merging two separately powered grounds into one. Each powered ground individually is meant to be the correct offset for its respective earpiece positive lead. Ignoring the electrical issues of merging them, it is hard to believe that this merged powered ground could sound good.

No internally there are chips that does the merging for you....the difference is perhaps 5%, but on the output side it is like 45% improvement...............

The reasons why lots of people use the output adaptor is because lots of cables used are co-axial, rather than 4 individual wires ...

Actually, it has more to do with the 71B just sounding so much better on it's balanced outputs........

My first foray into portrait mode. A bit more challenging for some reason, probably having to do with my cheap, old tripod. In any event, I am a bit happy about the turnout of this one. No 'shop, edit, or crop. James, if you will forgive me, the scenery in my locale doesn't allow me to compete with such phenomenal environmental decor as you have so kindly provided.

How can you possibly compare sincere praise for a photo with the upset you caused when I learned you'd got the FI-BA-SS and not the K3003?  Unfortunately, the pain and resentment just keep growing by the minute.  ;)

EDIT: BTW, nice new pic above, though the one below remains my favourite by quite a margin.

woodcans,

Definitely one of my favorites. Nice work. I like that I can see your fingerprints on the Hi-Res. Humanity added to the cold steel. A metaphor with the cold steel representing the headphone audiophile industry, and your fingerprint representing Final Audio Design - leaving its mark, humanizing the machine.

blink.gif  wow that is nice looking.

Now I'm mad at my USPS carrier. Whenever its something useless, it comes at like 11 AM. Whenever its something I really want, I'm the last box on the truck.

YES!

Congrats to both of you. vwinter, I hope it's sooner than later.

Having received the Kaede AND 1plus2 today, I can say the Heaven V and VI are no slouch, and are absolutely players at that level. Without a doubt. They have magic the other don't. And Vice versa.
