If you're interested in the Heaven VI for a solid all-rounder, check out what I wrote for Musica Acoustic's blog:

Wow, that is truly a glowing review. I have pretty much sworn of balanced armature headphones that require a seal against the eardrum to produce bass - they are too hard on my aging ears. Hence my much loved ES5 now gather dust. However, that you rate this above the ES5 speaks volumes.

Well written and a good informative read. Thanks.

Thank you sir. I know you would be a fan of the Heaven VI. Much more versatile, like the ES5, but with that FAD sound. And just clean without being hot.

It's just a fantastic earphone.

I'll be submitting impressions of the Heaven V to Musica Acoustic's blog as well this week. They'll include a brief comparison between it and the IV and VI.

Nice, I am very intersted in your notes.

To this day I get a chuckle every single time I listen to this track (love the words [and music]). The PF IXs do a very interesting job on the rendering of this peculiar song — lovely, really: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YXUmKw4pFdc

I've joined this party with a pair of FI-BA-SB...

Very good initial impressions, sure they'll only get better :)

You have me thinking. Last night I got home from my trip, plugged in the 1601SC and I got lost for five hours. I did not smoke a cigar. I did not move until it was past midnight and I forced myself to bed. It has been a long time since music drew me in like that. My best tubes on the EMP have come close but not the same.

There is something very special in the resonance of the chrome copper and your review suggests that it works wonders on the Heaven VI too. I could use these in a limited manner (time-wise) for some harder rock that does not suit the 1601SC so well. I just asked Price Japan for a quotation. They have a quote for the gold plated model but I want the natural.

The lead singer sounds like she's been beamed into the present straight out of the 60s folk scene and the whole thing has such a charming air of purity and nostalgia, that you'd think it was made for being listened to with the FAD Piano Fortes.

Highly, highly recommended!  smile_phones.gif

It took me forever to listen to this but... wow!

And now... for something completely different ;-)

Now that is impressive. Beautiful photo. Makes me think of our 'club'. Locks those of us in who will likely never forget our enjoyment of these phones, so to speak. And I suspect the photographer is in the photo as well...excellent touch!

So, I noticed some low-end distortion out of my FI-BA-SS on a few certain tracks. And so I started swapping out gear. Like headphones, the iPod, then CLAS DAC, then SR-71B - to isolate the source of the distortion. So, I was not trying to test sound quality, just get to the bottom of the distortion.

I learned a few things:

1. High-end gear generally makes a CONSIDERABLE difference vs playing music straight from iPod. I wasn't trying to listen for that, but it hit me in the gut like a swift punch. The sound out of the CLAS + 71B is so much more clean and 3-D. Everything improves. I used to listen to IEMs like the Heaven VI straight out of the iPod. Now I have a hard time doing that knowing how much of an improvement I can have.

2. My setup is so revealing that I am hearing distortion in the recording, and it's only with very transparent gear like that I can even hear it. The bass on full-size dynamics glosses though it. But put a high-end BA at the end of my chain, and you hear it all.

Very often I have found gear gets the blame for either bad recordings or the effects of compressed files. I find anything less than lossless reduces dynamic range. It may measure fine but I trust my ears in what they are hearing.
I said something a week ago to a fellow over on the T5P thread. He was saying they were terrible headphones, a bit like Hertsens view of them then we found out the guy was listening directly from a mediocre soundcard on his computer but he just did not get that was the problem and kept blaming the headphones!

Generally I find the better the gear the more care has to be taken in getting the best out of it, I think that is the same for a lot of high quality things, there is less compromise and more focus on a specific job.

Interesting. Some swear by lossless, some swear by cables. I never dip below 320, but Ian, because of you I am now going to have to conduct a blind experiment to see if I can actually tell the difference. In quick tests I have not been able to. But that was not with deep listening of very familiar tracks.

That would be great especially with the SS phones I trust your judgment on things a lot. I have done it blind with friends, and their response has always been that the details are the same but one draws them into the music more than the other.

I went the whole hog and just rip to wav seeing as hard drive space and SD cards are cheap now.

BTW, have you seen the custom version of the TU-05 amp?

Oh yes, another big difference recently were two albums I have owned on tape, vinyl and cd, Tea for the Tillerman and Rumours. The CD's never came close to the tape or vinyl in terms of engagement, they always felt lifeless and harsh in comparison. Well. I got them on 24/96 and what a difference it makes, all the life and texture is back. Some 24/96 stuff has not been as good but these two and all the albums I have downloaded from HDTT have been magnificent!
