Final Audio Design Impressions and Discussion Thread - Page 97

I remember sometime last year James and I were discussing the 160Xs—I think at the time of our exchange he didn't have the 1602SB and I didn't have the 1601SS—and said he felt the 160X dynamic drivers were fairly sophisticated. I didn't take that much notice of his comment right there and then, but as my PF IX sonic amazement kept growing by the day, I soon began to wonder whether there was some truth in that (passing) comment — to this day I don't know, to be perfectly honest (I'm still more inclined to believe it's a combination of things, though I've to admit I still wonder about that observation), but I find the 160X's SQ—as weird / skewed / off / wrong / different / 'low-fi'—to be very sophisticated/refined. Bold, a stroke of genius, really.

I'm still on the lookout for a rose gold 1601SC. Maybe someday I'll find one still in the original package, abandoned in the back of a supplier's warehouse. Or maybe someone will come along and sell me their pristine set.

Be advised that a pair of 1601SC in mint condition is worth nearly as much as a brand new pair of HE90.

I've seen far more HE90s come up for sale than 1601SCs. The big problem with most of the 1601SCs that do turn up is the rose gold finish: it's prone to developing a lot of imperfections, in particular dark spots. Not sure if this is due to a reaction between human skin and something that went into the plating process or if it's due to the actual top layer peeling.

Either way, I suppose one could cite it as an early example of FAD's "Aging" concept. : P

Unfortunately the results aren't that appealing in my opinion. FAD evidently felt the same way, as they've abandoned that particular finish ever since.

Actually, soon after writing my previous post, I thought that that might well be the case.

Had the exact same thought as I was reading the previous paragraph.

On my way to check it out...

Thanks for your kind comments on the pictures folks.

i just downloaded a 24/96 copy of Berlioz's Symphony Fantastique from High Definition Tape Transfers. I love this company. They take so much care and use such high quality equipment to transfer from tape or LP beautiful old recordings. I think they are made for the PF's!

This is the recording I downloaded. It is in several sections on youtube, here is the first. A feast for your ears!
