I have to say that as much as I love FAD's designs for most of their IEMs, and the pretty stunning design of their now discontinued (and never actually released) Muramasa VIII, the two headphones shown in that video look...er...rather...oh...er... nvm.

I think you mean meh. wink.gif

^^  Too sophisticated to use that term, but as they say, you nailed it — my thoughts, that is.  ;)

The all black plastic one looks like those Panasonic headphones one can buy for $40 but I do like the other one.. Having said that, I am happy with my T5P's so I won't be in the market for them.

^^  Mind you, as much as I love my HD800s, the best phone I've ever heard, I think their design is pretty "meh" — I much prefer the HD600's design.

In agreement of you aesthetic critique (minus the "my" part), how functional do you think the HD800 design is?

I hate putting the HD800's on, every time I do my fingers press that metal mesh in and it just feels so cheap.

PS. What other line of headphones inspires such artistic evocations? In word, in photo, in music, in intellectual discourse that is not science based, but seeded in an emotional revelation few understand.

it's cool that you're heavily into the PFs but audio snobbery really bugs me. not everyone wants their music served up with that flavouring. it's not that we don't get what FAD is trying to do - recreate the sound of a horn speaker in an earphone but that the effect doesn't appeal.

That's the thing, the HD800 is the most comfortable headphone I've ever tried—absolutely no question about that—and a true blessing after years and years of trying many different cans and not being able to wear them for more than 20-40 mins. So, to me it was a simple case of "who cares about a not so great design when ergonomics are incredible and SQ is stellar". Seems the Muramasa VIII I mentioned earlier may be (or may have been, rather) the most uncomfortable headphone on earth, btw.

They were supremely comfortable for me when I tried them out for about half an hour in a store. Literally everything about them almost brought a tear to my eye, except, like ianmedium said, when the mesh deformed to the touch, which I didn't expect, I had the sudden urge to yell "I didn't do it!"

The Murasama VIII looked heavy enough to do bicep curls with, though I suspect I'll never find out.

As impressive as the Muramasa VIII is to look at, it's also the most uncomfortable headphone I've ever worn by a huge margin. Literally too painful to wear for more than a few minutes.

From a comfort factor the new headphones should be a major improvement. But then duct taping two bricks to your face would be an improvement over the Murasmasa as far as comfort goes. I am a bit disappointed by the materials they're using on some of the models however; when the guy in the video taps on the Pandora VI you hear the tik-tik-tik of plastic for what should be metal. Faux metal trim? That's a big no no. If you're doing plastic, then make it look space-age or give it some bold color.

The models that look like the Momentum (III and IV?) actually get this more correct IMO with the branding of "Final" along the band and the retro cup design that reminds me of the old Koss and Ashidavox phones from the 70s. Unfortunately this stuff has all been done to death by Panasonic, Audio-Technica, and now Sennheiser. It's honestly a little surprising to see a design house like FAD falling so far behind in trends, basically following instead of leading.

I think in a way this is a very humbling thing for them. The Muramasa was, to put it bluntly, a total failure. They approached their first full-sized headphone with an air of bravado and confidence, basically shocking the industry with the price tag and refusal to compromise. In other words a very FAD way of going about it. Only whereas this works for them when it comes to IEMs and even full-sized horn speakers (see their legendary speaker installations), it flopped with headphones. Without getting too much into my theory of how earphones and speakers are actually more alike to one another than either is to headphones, I'll say that FAD evidently discovered with full-sized headphones they had to compromise after all.

I actually wouldn't be at all surprised if these newer headphones sounded better than the Muramasa at only 1/6th the price. Unlike the earphone industry, the headphone industry is much older and you don't really see the same level of innovation. With earphones you see new concepts every year, but with headphones you sort of get this "it's all been done" vibe. It's a lot harder to do something genuinely novel with headphones and have it succeed IMHO. Still FAD being FAD it's nice to see they're apparently sticking to hybrid driver arrays in full-sized headphones again.

Yes, the mesh thingy is very true, but you very quickly get used to it, that is, 'learning' not to touch that part of the phone — been using mine daily for 3.5 months now and no issues whatsoever in that respect.

Now, wasn't this a FAD thread?  ;)

Exactly my thoughts (bolded text). (excellent post, btw)

Another brilliant track rendered superbly by the PF IX (and the 1601SS): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pE7RbNhaT0c

Good service from Price Japan on the Heaven VI chrome copper. Asked for a quote on Wednesday, received notice that it was on their site Thursday. Ordered it that same day and got the shipping notice and EMS tracking number today Sunday.

Difficult to complain about that.
