Nice, MF.
I feel ya there. Both the FI-BA-SS and Piano Forte continue to astonish me. Tonight my flavor is the PF.
The SS is just so clean, clear, and pure. It's like walking with music herself, holding her hand, and experiencing the rejuvenation of a brand new morning with freshly fallen snow, together, as one. Intimate purity with music herself.

Sorry for the triple post in a row. But I just want to say, the FI-BA-SS makes every last headphone, earphone, IEM - BA or dynamic I've heard, sound colored and undeserving.
The PF is grand for what it does, But if you want raw purity, like finding a naked virgin on red satin sheets, find yourself a pair or FI-BA-SS. Whether you actually want to discover that or not, you don't want to know. But it's something you will never forget.

To me, there's a purity that comes with the FI-BA-SS. It's like a snowy white landscape on a clear day. My white-cabled version is slightly warmer than the black-cabled one, so add to that picture some sunlight being cast across the white forest floor. The slightest feeling of warmth on the back of the neck, the soft purple shadows of trees adding strokes to the canvas like fine calligraphy.

http://www.amazon.com/Listening-Booth-1970-Marc-Cohn/dp/B003IFMXAEI just ordered it, too! Even though I'll be listening to it on my colored and undeserving orthos.
I couldn't resist SF! Don't worry - I could never be offended by your love for the PFs!

Thanks for the recommendation Ian! I think this could very well be my first and last "cover" album. The samples at Amazon sold me.

Thanks Ian! That's one of the very few cover albums that works for me, too.

For your consideration:
(click on album names to listen on grooveshark.com)
Peter Mayer - Goodbye Hello
I've never been a fan of cover albums in general, nor a big Beatles fan in particular, but this one has simply brilliant musicianship and arrangements, combined with very good recording quality.
Thea Gilmore - John Wesley Harding
Spot-on Amazon review, nothing left to add: "OK...I've loved Dylan all my life but not for his voice. Arguably, he might be one of the best song writers of all times...behind Lennon and McCartney, but his voice just sucks. Get this album, you will not regret it."
Matthew Sweet & Susanna Hoffs - Under the Covers, Vol 1
Together with the subsequent Vol 2, one of my favorite "feel-good albums" and great music for driving. Never cared much for the Bangles, but Hoffs is surprisingly competent here.

Hmm... I am experimenting with going in an entirely different direction with the PF IX. Using the EMP as valve gain stage is pretty dreamy but I am not sure that it is giving me the cleanest results. Daisy-chaining the EMP and Stepdance is a different proposition than, for example, listening directly from the TU-5 (which I would like to hear...)
In addition, while I found the sound stage to be pretty interesting, I felt that I was losing some of the unique qualities of the PF IX in all those extra valve influences.
So now I have pulled out my old Headroom Micro DAC (early "2006" model). I stopped using this dac because it was too bright with the Beyer DT880/600 and I preferred the warmer analogue sound of the NOS USB Monica. Well, the Micro DAC is not too bright with the PF IX and it is uber clean, certainly cleaner than the UD100.
The combination of the Micro DAC and Stepdance is about as clean and neutral as you could hope for driving the PF IX. The only caveat is that the Micro DAC may be slightly brighter than neutral. (Either that or all of my other dacs are less bright than neutral.) I feel that I am getting the innate sound signature of the Piano Fortes and I am liking it.
Reflections for today. Tomorrow Never Knows. :-)

Seems like my cover album recommendations have stopped this thread dead in its track. Sorry for that.

In other news, my test weekend with the Tera Player and its surprising range of synergies / dis-synergies prompted me to try the FI-BA-SS with all my current sources (6 DAPs and 5 portable amps). Result: believe it or not, the SS sound best with Neutron Music Player on my Samsung Galaxy S3 (international version). No joke.
These days I rather tend to believe in (dis-)synergies between specific sources and IEMs than the universal superiority of any single (audiophile) source.

Great Piano Forte day. I am listening to Alice In Chains Unplugged and the mids are gorgeous. The acoustic guitars are rich I say, just rich!
(Really enjoying the Micro DAC as a source. The PF IX love all that clean detail.)
