Upgrading Amp, need help. - Page 2

I think you will have a hard time finding some one here who has a headroom desktop amp/dac plus all the other items you are considering as an upgrade for direct comparison. As stated above, headroom makes nice rigs and I own one. My guess is if you are looking for an upgrade to your headroom desktop, you might need to look a bit higher than a bifrost, valhalla, wa6.

Thanks,

I am not looking for a huge upgrade, but a small one (if my budget limits it). Most likely to upgrade from solid state to tube.

I'm looking at the WA2, but I need a DAC. If you say in need to look higher than the bifrost, then what would be another - affordable - option.

I'm stuck at same problem as you but no one answered me yet,

I have DacMini and I could tell you the amp Isn't very powerful but the Dac Is perfect

Well, you might want to run a wa2 thru the pre out of your headroom (therefore utilizing it's dac) and see how that sounds. I bet it would be a great combo with your new hd800. If you feel you need a dac upgrade, you could take care of that later. Maybe the bifrost would be a upgrade over the headroom. I'm just guessing. I know one thing. I'd love to own a wa2.

Also, do some reading up in the source section. There are more dacs being discussed over there than you can shake a stick at.bigsmile_face.gif

Yeah, I'll try my Headroom Amp/DAC as a DAC first with the WA2 and see how it sounds. I'll have to wait a couple of weeks to try it after I order it. :(

HD800 are high impedance, so I would suggest a nice OTL aka WA2. But the WA22 is said to be a tad warmer but transformer coupled so the audio signal is going through a transformer with all the good/bad things that follow. So if you wanna stick with woo, and HD800 go WA2 and find some nice tube that suits your style, or if you wanna later add some LCD or hifiman low impedance can, go for WA22.

OK, so I bought the HD800's and have them now. I am using them meanwhile with my Headroom Desktop Amp/DAC, but I still want to upgrade.

WA2 + Bifrost + HD800

WA6SE + Bifrost + HD800

WA6 + Bifrost + HD800

Valhalla + Bifrost + HD800

Best, or any other suggestions?

I have HD800's + Valhalla + Bifrost coming to me over the next couple weeks. How did your search pan out? I was considering all the same.  I also considered the Asgard as a result of this review here: http://www.headfonia.com/triple-schiit-asgaard-valhalla-and-lyr

However, I went with the Valhalla due to availability and my early impression of tubes. I can always try out the Asgard later when available again since its only $249.  I'm thinking the WA2/WA6 might be fun to check out as well. On top of that my Bro likes to modify Amps. He hasn't met one he couldn't improve yet. Though his initial glance at the Valhalla internals online triggered the comment "Moffat is no idiot." But he said he saw a couple things right off that could be improved. Obviously they had to stop somewhere in order to make production possible at the price range they were trying to hit.

Bifrost + Soloist? both units are pretty good.

The Yulong A18 is very good with the HD800. It's far better than my Burson HA160. I prefer the Burson with my HD700 though because their flaws complement one another. But HD800 in either single ended or with balanced cable is very good with the Yulong.
