"Mad Dog" by MrSpeakers, modified Fostex T50RP review - Page 289

Hey guys, I'm looking for a pair of headphones to complement my Denon D2000s, and Mad Dogs are on my list of considerations along with K550s and K702s.  I like the d2k's and their sub-bass, but I'm not so keen on them for stuff like rock and female vocals (from jpop and whatnot).  A couple examples of the kind of music I mean:

I have an X-Fi Titanium (non-HD) and I don't have a desktop amp, but I do have a Fiio E11 I could use until I have enough money to get something like the O2.  So, intro aside, I'd just like to get some opinions about whether or not they would be a good choice for my purposes (something more accurate with quality mids to complement the D2Ks' bass and smoothness).  I've also thought about getting a plain T50RP and applying BmWr75's Simple Mods to them since I'd have enough money to get an O2 for around the same total cost (my current budget is $300) but I'm not really certain of where they'd stand in a performance aspect.

On a side note, if Dan offered a white Mad Dog, I'd jump on the thing, call it the best thing since sliced bread, and end my audio journey.

The only reason I haven't gotten a pair of MD is because I don't like the look of the stock T50RP...

Send 'em in for a nice glossed white powder coat. It ain't too pricey either.

where could I do that? Will it come off easily? Will it work on metal as well?

I'm not saying that the Mad Dog is in any way technically superior to either of those two flagships: it's not. However, what I realized today was that the PS1000 and T5P never truly allow me immersion into my music; they lose sight of the goal of musical enjoyment in favor of sonic reproduction.

What I get from the headphones I'm keeping (my Mad Dog and ESP950) is something much more important to me than pure resolution or accuracy. I found myself truly enjoying my music for the first time in what seems like months today, coming through a meek uDAC2 and a $300 pair of headphones. In the past I've longed for an SR009 or an Orpheus, but I think my ears have found their true home here. The Mad Dog never sounds screechy, never lets me down on a song I love, and yet is able to astound me with detail almost at the same level as the TOTL gear I own, even on a modest setup.

I listened to Passengers, Sparklehorse, Broken Bells...and by the time I realized it was 10:30 and I'd done nothing with my evening by society's standards, I simply didn't care anymore. Thank you, Dan, for making what is definitely my sweet spot.

That, my friends, is what it's all about. After all the scouring and searching for the best of the best, we sometimes lose sight of what's best for our own ears. I'm thousands into this hobby, and only now am I realizing that the greatest satisfaction I get in it is with a half-K committment of cash between every audio component in my system. I'm rethinking it all, and I'm loving the way it sounds.

Those happen to be the two cans I'll be listening to tonight.  Both are great.

Those simple mods are pretty outdated...I'd look into BMF's work first.

I was going to type up a response as to why you should go with the Mad Dog...but...just go with the Mad Dog. Send them back within 15 days if you don't like them! :)

If you look at it objectively, you'd probably put in a good 10+ hours trying to tune them right... That's like $80 right there if you value your time at all, let's lowball and say $50 tho. Some good pads and other mod materials will easily total $50+ themselves, the TR50P are about $100... You're already $200 in without the extra V-Moda cable, warranty, etc. The price Dan charges seems pretty fair.

I agree. The only reason to choose to tinker with the Fostex yourself instead of choosing a nearly perfected mod is if you love the tinkering.

And if you can take away something meaningful from the modding experience (e.g. better understanding of damping and acoustics), which often is the case.

Modding in general is great, it's a fantastic flow activity and is almost always rewarding in the end.

Sure! I didn't say it wasn't rewarding, just that it's harder and you'd have to LIKE the tinkering.

Are cups not plastic and does powder coating not melt them ? How easy is it to remove cups, does soldered cable into the ortho not stop you taking them off ?

I'm new to finding good headphones and just bought a cheap pair of Superlux HD662 (the "fat DT 770"...maybe not) in the meantime...what would I gain by buying the Fostex MD's (probably loads !) ? I do like the fat warm bass on these though, I've just been dying to finally hear the ortho/planar magnetic sound...........

I do believe a low temp powder coat of sorts is used. Nonetheless, the T50RP's have been worked on and painted, etc.

I thought powder coating was for the bars and paint for the cups.  I could be wrong...

Thanks a lot for the sibilance replies. They become more and more attractive to me.

Too bad I have to import them, with additional shipping and customs costs.

Now, are there MD owners who have also the DT 150, or heard them?

How do they compare?

I am uncertain about that. Luis is going to stormtrooper my HD800 out. Which is plastic.

You may be correct, he mentioned a white gloss paint job and white powder coated screens, for example.
