thanks so much for your help.

Having both the Magni and E09K I can confirm happily that the Magni is better for the Mad Dog.

That's great news as I should get my Magni next week. I did consider the E09K but both it and the Magni were basically the same price, so it seemed like an easy decision to go with the Magni.

Yes I am. We've only lived here for 6 years but we do enjoy it. The Winters are much more hospitable than in Chicago or Colorado (our previous residences). Time to put some music through these things.......

I really like the sound signature of the Sennheiser Momentum, Denon D600, and Sony MDR-1R, but various comfort and build quality issues have prevented me from sticking with any of them.

Based on the above, I believe I prefer a colored sound signature as opposed to a more analytical one. Where do the Mad Dog (alphas) fit in that regard? And how do they compare to the above regarding bass? The reason I ask about bass, specifically, is because after reading comments praising the AKG K550's "deep" and "punchy" bass, I was shocked to discover they were some of the most anemic, sterile-sounding headphones I've ever heard. So, bass quality/quantity seems highly subjective.

For me, the MD hits the mark for accuracy and musicality. Meaning that it does add extra bass and treble to the material when it's not there (think Denon d2k). But when the material has a hard bass line with plenty of impact, the MD just seems to come from nowhere and slam the bass with all the visceral punch you'd want.

Which has better bass slam, the HE 400 or the Mad Dogs?

It's actually a close fight but I'd give a slight nod to the he400 for overall quantity. The he400 will sprinkle a touch of extra bass to that end of the spectrum. Whereas the MD does not such extra sprinkling. I give a nod to the MD for quality for it's texture and accuracy. Bass drums sound like bass drums. A bass guitar sounds very much like that instrument.

Don't mean to cop out on an answer, but I want to be fair and accurate as possible in my response.

The same people that claim any AKG headphones have deep, punchy bass are probably the same folks that consider the Denon D5000 to have overly muddy, bloated bass.

The Mad Dog, properly amped, seems to fall someplace in the center, though leaning closer to the impact of the Denons.

Fair enough. I should have my HE 400's next week. It still boggles my mind how the Mad Dog's at $299 are compared to much more expensive headphones. It certainly piques my interest.

I'd actually compare the MD to the he500 and he4 more so than the he400.

I find it hard to believe that little Fostex driver can compete with those headphones you mentioned.

Anyone think the mad dog sounds closed in and lacking air because of it's closed back design (compared to open headphones)?

Anyone upgraded cable since buying or even with Dan, through, e.g. BGT before buying?

I'm in love with the planar magnetic sound and don't have really good closed portable cans. I may have to try these with a good portable DAC/amp for my phone. I wonder how these would sound with the HiFi M8 when it comes out.
