"Mad Dog" by MrSpeakers, modified Fostex T50RP review - Page 12

The recent update fir the t50's have further reduced the bass....

Although ,I own the upgraded version, comparing the bass of the Lcd-2 rev2,is like comparing a Rolls Royce to a Hyundai.

Absolutely no comparison

I have been considering a new headphone in the $300 +/- range for home use only. My dream cans would be the LCD-2.2 (LCD-3 is so out of my range that I don't even entertain it). So, I had been considering a number of the usual suspects all of which are open cans -- e.g., Beyer DT880 (250 ohm); AKG Q701; Senn HD 600 or 650.  I was also considering bridging the gap in terms of price between those and the LCD-2 with something like the Hifiamn HE-500, but that is still a little more expensive than I would ideally like.  This thread, with comparisons of the Mad Dog to the LCD-2's, has really piqued my interest.  At the current price, if it even resembles the LCD-2 it sounds like a bargain. Does anybody in this thread like any of the aforementioned cans over the Mad Dog or is the Mad Dog just a much better value. I really had my mind set on an open HP, but all the praise here for the Mad Dogs has made me reconsider.

Also, I would be looking to drive the new cans with my Marantz AVR receiver, not a separate headphone amp (at least not for now).

Hopefully MrSpeakers does not mind me posting this (I can take it down if needed), but I took his measurements for the HD650, LCD2 v1, and the Mad Dog posted on his website and adjusted them so that they are all on the same scale visually. The measurements were originally on slightly different scales, making it hard to do direct comparisons. I did it out of my own interests, but I figured it might be helpful for others. I should mention that after the graphs were set to be on the same scale, I adjusted them so that all measurements match at 1KHz.

LCD2 v1 vs Mad Dog (MD is red/blue, LCD2 is green/purple):

Mad Dog vs LCD2 v1 MD is in red/blue

HD650 vs Mad Dog (MD in red/blue, HD650 in orange):

Mad Dog vs HD650 MD is measured in blue/red

All 3 headphones in one chart (same colors as above):

I'd love to hear a pair of these! Any chance someone would be willing to lend me a pair? wink_face.gif

Just to add my voice in, made my mad dog plunge for my birthday today. Still deciding on amp/dac setup but leaning towards o2+odac. The back order until July 31 for the dac component makes me sad in the face, but could be worth the wait...

Anyway, thanks to all in this thread who gave their impressions and comparisons! Saved me a bit of cash over the hd650's I was eyeing smily_headphones1.gif.

Oooooooooooooooh~~~ we'll see sometime~ need to mod a pair first when i get mine and make an amp for it haha... pretty sure the t50rp won't sound great with the dx100 relying on its internal amp.

Well, for now I'm going to be shipping them to someone else. And whoever after that.

I don't have much reservation about shipping over seas, as long as it doesn't cost too much. biggrin.gif

Jeez, I don't post about all the headphones I purchase -- just some of them.  biggrin.gif  I actually also purchased a refurbished (sealed) pair of Sennheiser HD-428 headphones off of my local Craigslist for $40 on Monday.  I have to start a new modification thread based on that headphone alone.  I found a way to control the level of bass.  And, the best part is that it can be adjusted.  In my case, during experimentation last evening, I did the "full" mod for a true bass audioholic.  Actually, I think they were pumping out more bass than the Beats could even accomplish.  After about 3 songs, I was literally getting a migraine from all of the bass -- yes, it was that heavy and prominent.  So, I quickly went downstairs and backed the modification down by 2/3rds and the bass was up a couple of clicks from the standard issue and sounding very nice.

I think these headphones have the potential to be some of the next headphones that could potentially hit the modification gurus around here.  The upper frequencies are almost - but, just slightly less than a Grado offering, so you have a nice level of bass, a good level of mids and a nice level of highs ... all for $40.00.  Hmm ... it's crazy what I've come up with and it's so simple.  I just need to create a thread, take a few pictures and create a few diagrams and then the hackers here can have at it.  wink.gif
