Hey guys! so i'm new to all this high quality audio shenanigans and would love some advice! i'm currently using and ipod touch 2nd gen (soon to get iphone) and Ultrasone hfi 780s. I would love to get an amp (or DAC. I know the difference, but not sure how they effect audio quality). Recommendations? Tips?

Thanks to all!!

If you are only planning to use your iDevices, then there really is no need to get a DAC, as only a few will bypass the DAC of the iDevices.

You are better off just getting an amplifier then (such as the Fiio E11).

Is there any particular price range you are looking for?

Not really a price range. Nothing absurd however. The best quality for the price is what i'm looking for.

I have the HFI-780's and the FiiO E11 amp. I use the amp with both my nano's 2nd & 3rd gens, also with my Sansa Clip+ (Rockboxed) and I just love it.

The 780's do not really need an amp from the iPods or the Clip+, but it is nice to have a little more power available if you want to turn it up!

The iPod connects through my DIY LOD to the E11, this gives you the advantage of only 1 volume control to worry about. The Clip+ connects through the headphone out so I set it for 0DB driving the E11.

If your looking for a very nice portable amp you can't beat the E11 for the price. Rechargeable Battery and a Transparent Sound (Too my ears anyway) with 2 levels of Bass Boost.

Thanks troll for the input! looks like E11 is a great option. However you kind of lost me with DIY's and ODB's and OBGYN's. All those acronyms made no sense to me... haha. If I purchase the E11's, will I need to make any other purchases? Thanks again!!!

You're most Welcome!

You'll need to pick up an FiiO L9 line out cable for the iPod/iPhone as well. (This is the Line Out Device) (I built my own so it was Do It Yourself) wink_face.gif

The E11 comes with a L8 cable which has a 3.5mm right angle mini stereo jack at both ends, this would work but it connects through the iPods headphone jack and you would have to adjust the volume output on the iPod.

The L9 cable is just like a dock connector, there is a fixed volume from the line out of the iPod, which provides a much better sound in my opinion.

You'll like the E11 it's a great little amp for the price. beerchug.gif

what about the E17? How is it different from the E11? Thoughts?

I don't have an E17 (Yet), So i can't comment on it's sound.

It has a digital volume control so you push up/down buttons instead of turning a knob. Some people don't like digital volume controls.

It is a DAC+amp when hooking up to USB / S/PDIF / Coax, or just an amp when hooking up AUX Line In. If you are going to connect this up to your computer as well to use it as a DAC, then this is a feature the E11 does not have as it's just an amp.

There is a massive thread with a lot more info on the E17 here

http://www.head-fi.org/t/587912/fiio-e17-alpen-first-impression-final-thought

All questions should be answered there if you care to sift through the 240+ pages :)

E17's were backordered from quite a few places a while back so finding one might take some time.

There are quite a few other amps that sound better than the E11 or E17 but the pricing scales up pretty quickly.

Here is an excellent review of 7 sub $100 amps

http://www.head-fi.org/t/596482/the-sub-100-portable-amps-shootout-7-1-amps-compared

And here is an older thread with 11 portable amps compared ranging from $129 to $699

Much info to chew through. :)

+1 on the Fiio E11.

For $13 (on eBay) you can get 2 extra batteries and a separate battery charger.
