now to be clear when I say multiple outputs I mean 1 balanced and 1 unbalanced active at the same time, from what I have seen this seems to be common among balanced phono pres

Thanks for the clarification - but my total/complete dislike/aversion/disdain on anything with XLRs makes me unable to help.

Is anyone using or has used a quadrophonic vinyl set up?

Just curious, I had a amp blow up today a loud pzztttttt hizzz magic smoke escaping. It was only a cheap 25 year old integrated, a drink spilt on a side table the amp lived underneath whilst it was playing! I am hoping the speakers are still ok.

While looking for a new one, (fancied trying a retro 70s something amp) I came across a few quadrophonic SQ decoders they caught my interest mainly as I knew nothing about them.

Naughty, naughty boy - spilling drink on good ol' amp ( said a certain guy whom I "vaguely" know - "he" did the same to his oscilloscope not that long ago - with tea... ).

Quad is the ultimate in vinyl analog - and it IS daunting. The most troublesome is the fact that getting quad records with their HF carrier (which enables quad in the first place...) not  shaved off by use and/or inadequate styli is getting ever harder/costlier. The best place to get info is http://www.quadraphonicquad.com/forums/activity.php?s=4a83255864de1faf296b40e62f531889

- but weigh the fact that even person as "obsessed & deranged" with vinyl as myself did not dare to dip his toe in that particular pond ... - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GvjKQzkRfToT.

If there were more quad records available to me, I would perhaps try to do something ; with SQ record count below fingers of my arms and exactly 0.00 CD4 records in residence, it just does not make much sense.

If Survivor says "f*** it", then there is absolutely no reason to waste time and effort.

I was looking for a old school 70's amp/receiver and came across one of these going for pocket change, now don't go telling me you wouldn't get interested in what it does. I might still buy it and just put it on the rack anyhow, just to look at cause its so Purrdy!

I like the nice and shiny.

I think it will only decode the QS system of quad which is a matrix.  Don't see it decoding the discrete CD-4 (RCA) type of quad record.  Prolly doesn't matter all that much.

NOT entirely true. JamieMcC is from UK - and although not dead centre London, STILL much more likely to stumble upon quad records than over here in Slovenia.

As a matter of fact, I used to follow CLOSELY this thread on QudrophonicQuad :

http://www.quadraphonicquad.com/forums/showthread.php?9035-Lou-Dorren-A-new-CD-4-Demodulator!!!

Unfortunately, it is loooong overdue - it started in 2007 ( since the beginning, two of Lou Dorren's close friends/colaborators have passed away... ) - and all one can hope and pray for is Lou will be able at least to finish the prototype before the inevitable . In this (and few related threads ) one can find most of the answers ever associated with vinyl reproduction - record cleaning included. It is THE asylum for the most hard core analog diehards - anywhere. But it assumes a certain level of prior knowledge and willingness to commit and learn along the way.

And $$$, of course.

If it is indeed pocket change - then proceed. The looks alone (and faces of visitors - WTF is THIS ) are probable worth it. It can play "only stereo", of course. And might have a good sounding ( actually that is most likely an oxymoron) headphone output.

Sorry, AS, I thought with four meters and an SQ logo that this integrated(?) would decode matrix quad.  No?

It would, of course. Problem are records ... - and SIGNAL TO NOISE RATIO - it was the whole of 35 or so dB in quad... It is much like buying Elcasette tape machine today - where on earth you will get the Elcassette tapes ? Same with WELL PRESERVED quad records today ... - if it has HF carrier (30 kHz +, depending on system ) worn away/damaged, it is no longer a quad record, but merely stereo one ; no decoder can help in such a case.

( said a guy who will, against all odds, proceed with in comparison with any quad system infinitely more rare records and decoder to play them ...)

Quad is not only something you buy "because it was there". It is a commitment - like rock'n'roll is not just music style but a way of life.

I did wonder about sourcing the records there looks to be a selection of quad ones available on ebay-uk at wildly varying prices. Though I guess its a bit of a leap of faith buying anything unseen.

Always is.  I've had good luck on ebay with used records although I've never bought a quad record, I see plenty of them.

Yes also had good luck with ebay when buying used, though I have had two a new records from amazon which required sending back they where so warped and also had damaged covers.
