I second the Rega. I picked one up and love it.

No problem! It should be fun and have a lot of attendees this go round. If you make it out to Phoenix for the meet, plan a trip to AZ Hi-Fi. It's a local Rega and Pro-Ject dealer (they sell other goodies too) and they are great people too. One of the few dealers in the valley who welcome any and everyone, even if it is to just take a listen to some really good music. : - )

Funny that you mention AZ Hi-Fi, I went out there with my dad in January and we got him a new DAC.  There are some other dealers in town that we checked out but they are geared towards those with a healthy budget.  AZ Hi-Fi was much more grounded.  I don't know if you've been recently but they care Audeze products, any chance we'll see the owner at the meet?

Yes I do know about that. They are such a wonderful dealer and they are part of the reason why I am gearing more towards speaker listening than headphone listening. There is a possibility that they will be at the meet, but only time can confirm this.

Great news, I'll let the thread continue on track now haha

After having a sought out in my parents loft and discovering boxes of my old records not seen for twenty years. The urge to hear them again was to strong to ignore after some research and an opportunity presented itself and I am soon to be the new owner of a second hand Rega 3 in mint condition complete with arm and p77 cartridge. It also comes with a clearaudio nano-phonostage. I will be collecting it Thursday so I was pleased to find this thread as I am sure I will have a few questions on correctly setting it up. The last time I used a turntable was 20 plus years ago on a budget dual.

Yes, I went through all these emotions when considering a Vinyl rig (which i am still waiting for..). One thing to note is that basically vinyl is making a come back and alot of music is being produced as vinyl, as well as cd and download. If your music preferences are really everything but rap then you should be covered. You can buy vinyl from amazon, elusicve disc, music direct, etc as well as local record stores.Prices for new vinyl vary but range from eh $20 to $50 depending on the source material.

"budget" audiophile turntables rigs start out at about $300 to $400. "audiophile" phono pre-amps start around $100 to $200. These are all for new products. U-turn Orbit is a nice kickstarter choice :)

Thanks the Rega 3 comes up for sale quite often over here in the uk so spares and upgrade parts are easy to find and can often be had for a keen price from those who like to box swop.

I picked the  Rega 3 with R200 arm p77 cartridge and clearaudio nano-phonostage up for $400.

Nice deal, can't go wrong with that price!

Well having just realised I now have three phono stages, as along with my old records the other day I found some of my first budget hifi kit a Marantz PM151 amp which has a phono stage  (I also have old Yamaha dsp reciver with a phono stage) so It will be interesting to see how they both compare with the more modern clearaudio nano-phonostage which is coming with the Rega.

I also found my MS15 Mordaunt Short bookself speakers these and the Marantz were my very first amp and speakers and they had not seen the light of day for about 20 years.

On a whim of nostalgia I thought I would connect them all up today via my Marantz NA7004 which I have been using as a standalone bedroom headphone rig. I was not actually expecting much and was gob smacked.  I really cant remember these speakers ever sounding so nice and considering that these speakers now go for next to nothing on fleebay. I was well chuffed with the result.

its also kind of neat listening to the old kit playing lossless tracks over them streamed via ipad mini with airplay. I think they will be staying for the time being.

OK so at last my Rega has landed thanks to some very nice friends who have gone out of their way to help courier it to the island I live on. Its Xmas come early for me!

I have my first real question regarding the separate phono stage. The nano is small but has a really nice feel of quality about it and looks hewn from a solid billet of alloy and boy its heavy for its size.

My cable connection seems a bit crowded the forked end termination of my arm ground wire on to the nano's ground connection (which can be seen in the centre above the power cable web pics below) has only microns of space between it the rca leads and power lead I really don't want it to touch the other connections so.

Can I attach the phono arm ground to my amplifier ground instead of the ground of the phono stage to gain some space?

TIA

The ground should stay connected to the phono pre. If you're worried about it touching something, just wrap some electrical tape around the suspect area and you'll be fine.

Ok brunk thanks, I also changed out my rca's for ones with narrower shoulders and have more room now. I had also spoken with the seller who said the arm up for the cartridge was all set up and that I should not have to worry about alinging and setting for correct weight of the cartridge.

So I then had to chose from the pile what to play first this was more difficult than it sounds after some hesitancy I pulled from its sleeve

Just sitting back with a big smile
