Portability, sound quality, comfort - impossible in one pair of cans?

It doesn't matter how you look.

It matters that you are pleased with the sound.

Don't be a slave to fashion.

Between ATH-M50 and HFI-780 I have to choose M50, because of the build and comfort. Sound quality wise they are bit different. M50 sounds more "fun", bass can get really low, but only if the song requires it. 780 is much flatter and overall more balanced, the sound seems more studio-like.

I have the winner of the latest duel, but I'm still not convinced I want to keep them. They are really big for listening on the go. Is there anything comparable in terms of comfort and bassy sound quality, but more suitable for portable use? I've tried Senns HD 25 1-II, no comfort at all. And from what I've read so far I can tell: Beyer DT1350 is the same killer i terms of clamping force. B&W P5 sounds weak. ATH-ES10 out of my budget. V-Moda M80 comfort sucks...

1. comfort
2. sound quality with strong bass
3. looks and portability

If clamping force is the problem you could try "breaking in" the HD-25.  Clamp them on a big pile of books (standing up, of course) or something to stretch them out.

It really makes a difference.  I did this with the Sennheiser HD580.  They felt like they had the clamp of death too new out of box.  By the time I was done with them they would hardly stay on my head (exaggerating)

Only drawback was the pads got a bit flat, I could have avoided this if I put something in the middle to transfer the stretching force directly to the earcups instead of the earpads.

The Sennheiser Amperior was just released at Apple.com and may be worth checking out.

The Amperior are the HD25 with a new paint job...

How about the ATH-ES88 (though I don't think it is quite as bassy as the M50, but is more comfortable and compact) or the AiAiAi TMA-1 / new TMA-1 Studio (should actually be more bassy but also a lot more portable). Those are both pretty attractive cans :)

Otherwise the DT1350?

If you want circumaural, portable, isolating, comfortable, handsome-looking, and with great SQ, I can't help but only recommend the Sony MDR Z1000. They really sound like what you're looking for in a can. Either those or the upcoming V-MODA M-100.

There is one last headphone comparation I need to decide, before finalizing my pick:
ATH M50 vs V-Moda M80

V-Moda wins in portability, that is clear, but what about comfort (stiffness, clamping force), sound quality (bass oriented)? So far I've been using M50s for use on the go and they are surprisingly good, so I have almost decided to keep them, but M80s do tempt me.

Budget is not a big issue. I'm sure I can get all I'm asking for in 300$.
I prefer over-head headphones, because they look good, sound bigger, are more comfortable and ear hygiene is not an issue :-D I also have pretty weird shaped ear holes. I've never met any buds, that would fit me.

Try getting a TF-10 from the classified for around $100..  Reshell at fischer for about $110.. and about $40 for an ear mold.  Sound, comfort and portable.
