HiFiMAN HE-4 vs. Hifiman HE-400

Hi,

 

This is my first post here and I'm very happy to join to such a great community.

 

I want to buy a pair of headphone and upgrade from my AKG K240S. Hifiman HE-400 grabs my attention but when I went to head-direct I found out that it has another model that is only 449 $. Can anyone tell me what is the difference between these two? and which one is a better choice?

Good question. I really enjoy the HE-400 but haven't heard the HE-4, so I can't offer direct experience.

 

I will say that the HE-4 is very difficult to drive. Unless you have a rather powerful headphone amp, I wouldn't bother with it. HE-400 still likes power but is much more reasonable in that aspect. Just look at the sensitivity ratings.

Which amp do you use with your HE-400?

My favorite amp is the balanced Yulong Sabre A18, with a balanced cable on the HE-400. But it also sounds great from the Violectric V200, Apex Butte, Lake People G109P, and others. Even a portable amp like the Audinst AMP-HP does a pretty good job. You don't have to spend a fortune to get a good result, which I think is what HiFiMAN was going for with this model.

HE-4 is a "V shaped" headphone. Good bass and emphasized treble. I would recommend you go for HE-400. The build quality should be better, after two years my HE-4's screws are rusty and cannot be unscrewed. Wy I would want to unscrew them? Because the rubber beneath the screws is making noises and I had to use kitchen oil to partially fix it.
