No volume control. It says on the website that they are "new". And the black makes it look even cooler in my opinion ;)
I bought my via redcoon - online shop selling electronics in couple of European Union countries. But since they are on US philips site, I guess they will be (or already are) available overseas.

I had serious reservations about the flat cable, but after how it's performed for me, I'd do that mod in a hot minute. So far, though, it seems like no one's had much success trying it that way. Shame.

I'm confused. Looks like Uptowns in US and uptowns in UK have different specifiations:

Different frequency response. Strange. I'm going to be quite upset if it turns out there is a worse sounding headphone version or something like that.

Hello everybody,

I've seen that a couple of members here changed the cable on their Uptown's and I would also like to get rid of this annoying volume rocker and install a better cable. But before I start this DIY, could some of you how did changed the cable post some pics on how to remove the ear pads? I don't want to ruin my headphones and this could help me a lot. I have the earlier version of the Uptown, the one with the "Music Seal" ring on the cups (cans).

What is a good carrying case that will fit these headphones?

So to remove the volume control function why not just pop the casing open and remove the wire for the mic and make sure to resolder the left and right channel and ground... should work easily

There's only 2 wires connected to the driver (L and R). Its actually pretty easy just to recable the headphones.

ahh I couldnt remember, well then by removing the L/R on both ends and joining them while still leaving the other two wires intact on the chip you will still have ground and the bolume control should be bypassed. I do agree recable wasnt that hard just a little modifying is needed, if you have the right tools its no biggie at all (I didnt have the right tools lol)

Hi,

seems like there are two different references of the Uptown :

SHL5905FB/10

SHL5905FB/28

Here is a quick comparison between them :

Any thoughts?

The newer ones without the mic have a better response on the bass side, on the top end not much barely noticeable if at all. This honestly may be due to the cable itself as once I re cabled I definitely noticed better bass response, with  slightly better clarity through the whole range.

Today I visited an electronics shop in Belgium(Media Markt) and had a long discussion with the sales representative concerning which versions of these headphones ship with the new mic-unit(without the volume slider). Because there were non in stock at that moment I couldn't check the packaging or open it. The model on display had the old unit, but then I might have been on display for a while.

In the end we asked the Philips representative (who happened to be just in the building), he explained that the two version of the headphones 10 vs 28 are geographic codes.

In Europe only the 10 version is sold, In America a mix of both the 10 and 28 is supposedly sold.

However the representative seemed not be aware of the fact that there was a new volume control combo, he did state that there was no "new" product number for this product. So if this was changed one can't see by product code.

So I was wondering how can you tell whether the cans will have the new mic-unit? Is there a secret? Do only the black cans come with the new unit?

Please help me out!

Thanks in advance!

Only the black ones.

Not-so-fun fact: My Uptowns are also suffering from imbalance caused by the volume rocker.

Fun fact: After going through the replacement procedure (IE. they send me a new pair and I get to keep my old pair), I instead got a pair of Philips M1BT.

According to Philip's support I can keep them, so I'll just sell them off (as they're about double the price of the Uptowns) and get some other headphones. :)

Maybe they're phasing out the old Uptowns? Or maybe I just got lucky. Either way, I'm very satisfied.
